COURSE NAME  Introduction to Business Computer Applications B

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
	
This course is designed to cover the skills for Internet and Computing 
Core Certification (IC3) and Microsoft™ Excel Core Certification.  Students 
will be able to take national certification exams for these skills at an 
additional fee.   Upon passing the certification exams, the student will 
have a globally accepted and validated credential for resumes, employers, 
and higher education institutions.  

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
*To identify different types of computers, how computers process  
 information, and how individual computers fit into larger systems
*To identify how software works and how software and hardware work together 
to perform computing tasks
*To identify what an operating system is and how it works
*To identify the relationship between computer networks, other communication
 networks (like the telephone network)and the Internet
*To identify how electronic mail works and appropriate uses for it in society
*To utilize a web browsing application and search the Internet for 
information
*To identify how to use the Internet safely and legally

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

•$5 Lab Fee to printing and computer-related supplies 
(Make check payable to Salmen High Business Dept.)
•A 3 prong pocket folder or  ½-1 inch 3 ring binder with loose-leaf 
paper.  Students will be supplied handouts and will be responsible for 
taking notes.
•1 Pen (Blue or Black Only)

TEXTS REQUIRED:

Century 21 Computer Applications & Keyboarding by Hoggart, Shank, & Robinson
IC3, Internet and Computing Core Certification by Ambrose, Bergurud, et al
Microsoft Excel 2003 by Nita Rutosky 

DEPARTMENT POLICIES:

Class Rules:	(No eating, drinking, or chewing gum is allowed)
1. Be in your seat when the bell rings.
2. Come prepared with materials to work.
3. Raise your hand for assistance.
4. Remain in your assigned seat.
5. Respect yourself and others.

COMPUTER LAB RULES:

* The St. Tammany Parish School Board requires all students to have a 
  Student Technology Agreement on file for a student to have access to the  
  Internet.  No student will be allowed to access the Internet without it.
* It is every student's responsibility to respect the computers and property 
  of Salmen High School.  Students are responsible for reporting damage 
  immediately.  Any vandalism or mistreatment of school property will be 
  referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of discipline.
* Students must use their own disks.  Borrowing another student's disk is 
  considered cheating and will be treated accordingly.  No exceptions!
* Students are not allowed to change computer settings, screen savers, 
  screen tips or download from the Internet without permission.

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY:

* It is the student's responsibility to find out what he has missed when he 
returns from an absence. Failure to make up any missed work will result in a 
grade of "0". 

* Computer Assignments-all computer make-up work must be arranged with the 
instructor and completed in the computer lab.  Students must 
turn in this work no later than one week after the deadline without penalty.

* Written Assignments-students have two (2) class meetings to make up a test 
or assignment after an excused absence.
