Weekly Overview:

Unit Description: Limits and Their Properties

Essential Questions: Can the student describe a limit of a function?  Can the student find a limit graphically and numerically? Can the student evaluate limits analytically? Can the student describe what continuity is?  Can the student determine one-sided limits on a closed interval?

Resources/Materials: text book, old parish curriculum, ELMO, graphing calculator, TI Presenter, TV, dry erase boards

Standards/Benchmarks/GLEs:N-2-H, N-3-H, N-4-H,N-5-H, A-1-H,A-2-H,A-3-H,G-3-H,G-4-H

Objectives:

Tswbat understand what calculus is and how it compares to precalculus.

Tswbat understand that the tangent line problem is basic to calculus.

Tswbat understand that the area problem is also basic to calculus.

Tswbat estimate a limit using the numerical or graphical approach.

Tswbat learn different ways that a limit can fail to exist.

Tswbat evaluate a limit using properties of limits.

Tswbat develop and use a strategy for finding limits.

Tswbat evaluate a limit using dividing out and rationalizing techniques.

Tswbat determine continuity at a point and continuity on an open-interval.

Tswbat determine one-sided limits and continuity on a closed interval.

Student Learning Activities:

Ttw have some notes on the ELMO/board for the students to copy from Section 1.1 A Preview of Calculus.

As a class, we will go over the notes and discuss the problems on page 47, 1-11 together.

Ttw work Examples 1-5 on pages 49-51.

These examples will introduce the students to what a limit is and how to find a limit graphically and numerically.

Tsw work on a bellringer on the board/ELMO once they get into the classroom.

While the students are working on the bellringer, ttw walk around and check last night's homework.

Ttw work Examples 1 - 10 on pages 57- 64

Guided Practice: page 65, 1, 11,19, 23, 27,37

Independent Practice: page 65, 2-44 evens

Ttw have some bellringer problems for the students to work on once they come into class.  Ttw walk around and check last night's homework while the students are working.

As a class, we will go over the homework from last night and answer any questions.

Tsw work on problems from the rest of this section. They will work on pages 66-67, 45-85 odds, 103-104, 113-117 odds

Ttw go over Examples 1-4 on pages 69-71. As the teacher works these examples, continuity of a function will be discussed.

Guided Practice: page 76, 1- 18
