Unit Description:

In C-19 , Struggles with Democracy, we will look at the collapse of the Soviet Union, Latin American democracies, changes in E. and Central Europe, and reform and reaction in China.

Essential Questions:

Can students analyze the consequences of the break-up of the Soviet Union?

Can students explain ho reform in China has established them as a world power?

How has central and eastern Europe adjusted to the fall of the SU?

Resources/Materials: Teacher generated materials, curriculum, and textbook.

Standards/Benchmarks/GLEs: GLE’s: 47,49,51

Objectives:

Explore the changes towards democracy in Latin American countries.

Identify events leading to the break up of the SU and the different leaders of the country after it occurred.

Explain changes in Germany and other former Soviet satalite countries after the Berlin Wall came down.

Explain changes in Germany and other former Soviet satalite countries after the Berlin

Describe China’s democracy movement and the relationship between economic and political change in China.

Student Learning Activities:

Continue working on C19 study guide.

Finish study guide and begin discussing Latin American democratic changes.

Discuss the cause/effect in the Soviet Union which led to its collapse. Brainstorm what might result from this collapse in Europe.

Discuss how Central and E. Europe implemented changes as a result of the Soviet collapse. Berlin wall.

Discuss the steps taken in China to both reinforce communism and open China to foreign diplomacy and trade.

Unit Description: C-17—Restructuring the Postwar World

Essential Questions:

Can students describe the causes of the major cold war crises and conflicts and their effects on the world?

Can they compare the communism in the Soviet Union with that in China?

Can the students describe the end of colonial rule in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East?

Can students describe the role of the UN in the contemporary world?

Resources/Materials: Text, Outside resources, media, the curriculum.

Objectives:

Analyze the US-Soviet postwar split.

Describe the US containment of communist expansion; define Cold War.

Analyze the Chinese civil war and explain how China split into two different countries.

Describe Mao’s Marxist regime and how it changed China

Political cartoon interpretation and discussion. Section1 discussion of the origins of the cold war and some early policies.
