Course Description:   This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to basic computer literacy skills such as hardware, software, operating systems and the Internet. In addition sudents will be introduced to productivity programs, specifically spreadsheet and presentation software.  Upon fulfillment of this course, students will be able to produce simple personal and business documents.  Skills needed to obtain Microsoft™ Certification will be emphasized.  Some students may wish to obtain these industry-based certifications in order to enhance their future. I hope this will be YOUR goal! 

 

Course Objectives:

  Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • To demonstrate mastery of basic computer literacy skills.
  • To demonstrate the ability to correctly operate and care for the computer.
  • To demonstrate the ability to efficiently create, print, format, and edit spreadsheet and presentation documents.
  • To apply critical thinking and problem-solving sills utilizing the Help feature.
  • To enhance the visual display and clarity of documents.
  • To work with multiple documents.
  • To create and format tables.
  • To insert graphic elements.
  • To explore the Internet.

Expectations
:  In this class you will be expected to enter the classroom quietly and go directly to your seat, remain in your seat in front of your computer (no rolling in chairs) until the bell rings, follow instructions on the first request, raise your hand to ask for assistance, respect your classmates by remaining quiet, and use your class time as directed.  Playing games, downloading software, changing computer settings, watching videos, turning off other student’s computers, etc. will not be allowed. You will be expected to follow all of the following:

 

Classroom Rules:

  1. Be seated and ready when the bell rings.
  2. NO food, drinks, candy, or gum in the lab.
  3. Stay in your assigned seat until the bell rings.
  4. Follow school rules regarding ID, Dress Code, etc.
  5. Respect self, others, school property, computers and books.

 

Computer Lab Rules:

    • The St. Tammany Parish School Board requires all students to have a Student Technology Agreement on file for a student to have access to the Internet. No student will be allowed to access the Internet without it.
    • It is every student’s responsibility to respect the computers and property of Salmen High School. Students are responsible for reporting damage immediately. Any vandalism or mistreating of school property will be referred to the Principal’s office.
    • Students must complete their own work. Borrowing another student’s work is considered cheating and will be treated accordingly.
    • Students are not allowed to touch another students computer, change computer settings, screen savers, screen tips or download from the Internet without permission.
    • Students are to work on this class assignments only, unless permission is granted.  If finished assignments working ahead is encouraged.  Students are not allowed to play games, email, or go to inappropriate websites. Only educational websites are allowed. 
    • Additional guidelines and procedures are listed in the Guidelines and Procedures Student Handbook.

 

Discipline Policy:  If any of the above inappropriate behavior occurs, the following discipline procedures will be followed.  Behavior problems will NOT be tolerated in the classroom.

           

            First offense:                 Verbal Warning

            Second offense:            Alternate assignment and/or conference with the teacher

            Third offense:                Lunch Detention

            Fourth offense:              Strike and/or Parent Contact

            Fifth offense:                 Discipline Referral to Administration      

 

Make-up Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to make-up work within 2 days (2 days for each missed day) of an excused absence, unless arrangements are made with the teacher.  A zero will be given after one week if student has not made arrangements with teacher.  All computer work must be made up in the computer lab at school.

 

Bathroom Passes:
Each student will be allowed 2 bathroom passes per 9 weeks.  Students must sign out and in and carry bathroom lanyard to facilities.  Bathroom passes not used may be turned in for extra points at the end of the grading period.

Upon fulfillment of this course, students will have completed timed writings and will be able to produce simple business documents.  Skills needed to obtain Microsoft™ Office Word Core Certification will be emphasized. Some students may wish to obtain this industry-based certification in order to enhance their future. I hope this will be YOUR goal!
