Course Description:   This course helps students gain an understanding of the business/marketing principles necessary to start and operate a business. Students will learn basic economic principles related to business ownership. They will identify and assess common traits and skills found in entrepreneurs, explore business opportunities, and compare the risks and rewards of owning a business. The primary focus of the course is to help students understand the process of analyzing a business opportunity, determining feasibility of an idea utilizing research, developing a plan to organize and promote the business and its products/services, and finally, to understand the capital required, the return on investment desired, and the potential for profit. The performance objectives are designed to work in conjunction with DECA and students are encouraged to participate in this organization and participate in the activities and competitions of DECA.

 

Course Objectives:

  Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • To demonstrate an understanding of the nature and scope of selling.
  • To demonstrate the need for the development of product knowledge.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the process and technique of selling.
  • To explain the role of market research.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the nature and scope of marketing research.
  • To demonstrate the understanding of the importance of a business plan.
  • To explain the purpose of writing a good business plan.
  • To write a business plan.
  • To present a business plan.

Expectations:  In this class you will be expected to enter the classroom quietly and go directly to your seat, remain in your seat in front of your computer (no rolling in chairs) until the bell rings, follow instructions on the first request, raise your hand to ask for assistance, respect your classmates by remaining quiet, and use your class time as directed.  Playing games, downloading software, changing computer settings, watching videos, turning off other student’s computers, etc. will not be allowed. You will be expected to follow all of the following:

 

Classroom Rules:

  1. Be seated and ready when the bell rings.
  2. NO food, drinks, candy, or gum in the lab.
  3. Stay in your assigned seat until the bell rings.
  4. Follow school rules regarding ID, Dress Code, etc.
  5. Respect self, others, school property, computers and books.

 

Computer Lab Rules:

    • The St. Tammany Parish School Board requires all students to have a Student Technology Agreement on file for a student to have access to the Internet. No student will be allowed to access the Internet without it.
    • It is every student’s responsibility to respect the computers and property of Salmen High School. Students are responsible for reporting damage immediately. Any vandalism or mistreating of school property will be referred to the Principal’s office.
    • Students must complete their own work. Borrowing another student’s work is considered cheating and will be treated accordingly.
    • Students are not allowed to change computer settings, screen savers, screen tips or download from the Internet without permission.
    • Additional guidelines and procedures are listed in the Guidelines and Procedures Student Handbook.

 

Discipline Policy:  If any of the above inappropriate behavior occurs, the following discipline procedures will be followed.  Behavior problems will NOT be tolerated in the classroom.

           

            First offense:               Verbal Warning

            Second offense:          Alternate assignment and/or conference with the teacher

            Third offense:              Lunch Detention

            Fourth offense:            Strike and/or Parent Contact

            Fifth offense:               Discipline Referral to Administration 

 

Make-up Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to make-up work within 2 days of an excused absence, unless arrangements are made with the teacher.  All computer work must be made up in the computer lab at school.
