My name is John Beck, and I teach Biology at Southwood High School. I
was born in Ada, Oklahoma. I spent my childhood in various places, including
Georgia, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. I graduated High School
from Tecumseh Christian Academy in Tecumseh, Oklahoma.
I attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and earned a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. After graduation, I entered
the U. S. Air Force as a commissioned officer, and became a pilot. I have
flown numerous aircraft, including the T-37, T-38 and B-52. While in the Air
Force, I lived in North Dakota, California, Virginia, Louisiana, and Guam
USA. I earned my Masters Degree (MBA in Information Systems) while on active
duty. I retired from active duty after attaining the rank of Major.
I am certified to teach Biology in the state of Louisiana through Louisiana
Tech University. This is my third year teaching at Southwood High School.
My teaching philosophy is relatively simple. First, I believe our high
school students should be treated as young adults. Since my students will
soon be graduating and entering the “real world,” I believe the
responsibility, work ethic, and skills they learn in their high school years
should prepare them for life after school.
Second, as a teacher, I am committed to providing my students with everything
they need to succeed. I will do my best to teach the concepts for the course
they are taking, in a way that will maximize their achievement. To assess
how well they learn, I use numerous methods, including exams, homework,
quizzes, and classwork.
Finally, education of our young adults requires a team effort from the
teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians. Strong support from home
reinforces the things we teach.
