Author Studies
Please check the calendar on my website to find the birthday of the author and select two books on that date.
A great way to get children excited about reading is to study various authors throughout the school year! Here are some fun ways to incorporate author studies in our classroom!
Examine different authors each month! Our Mystery Readers read books written by these authors. Check out books from the school library or public library written by the author.
Read 2 books during your visit! Children enjoy parents reading with great anticipation.
Visit websites about your author! If you are unable to find a book, please research and tell us
about the author or subject matter. We are great listeners!
Your visit is a great celebration to the children!
Sometimes we integrate math by graphing our favorite characters from books!
Some of my favorite authors to study include:
Kevin Henkes
I love to study Kevin Henkes at the beginning of the year because of his books Chrysanthemum and Lily and the Purple Plastic Purse. Chrysanthemum is a wonderful story that helps students focus on names. There are dot to dot activities, coloring pages, and wonderful recipes that come from the stories.
Tomie de Paola
Some of my favorite titles include:
The Legend of the Bluebonnet
The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush
The Popcorn Book
Jingle the Clown
The Legend of the Poinsettia
Tomie has also written and illustrated a wide variety of books based on Christian themes.
Robert Munsch
Robert Munsch is a hilarious author.
Some of our favorite titles are:
Alligator Baby
Pigs
Stephanie's Ponytail
Jan Brett
Jan Brett is a beautiful illustrator and author. She has a wonderful website filled with all kinds of beautiful downloads and printables. The Gingerbread Baby and The Hat and The Mitten, are wonderful for comparing and contrasting during the cold winter month of January!
Dr. Seuss
No author study would be complete without the infamous Dr. Seuss! He is a great author to study either in February or March because his birthday is March 2.
Robert McCloskey
Children love the colorful illustrations of this Caldecott winning author and illustrator.
One Morning in Maine
Blueberries for Sal
Peggy Parrish
