Introduction/Overview
Since Talented Art students attend class only two days a week, their work
will be based on aesthetic quality and craftsmanship not on quantity of
production. I require that the students attend class regularly and perform
to the best of their ability. This includes: Following Directions,
Originality, Effort, Use of time, Appearance/Craftsmanship, Completion of
assignment and Visual Effectiveness based on the Art Elements and Design
Principles to be emphasized in the lesson. Students do not receive academic
quality points for this class until they reach high school. In high school,
the Talented Art class is a daily graded elective.
Review classroom rules and procedures. I follow the school discipline policy.
If student has received several infraction notices and the undesirable
activity persists after I have requested that it stop, I will turn in a
discipline report to the office.
Review art lesson process and measurement. Samples of work created by
historically established artists or work created by indigenous cultures will
be referenced according to the demands of the area of study to be addressed
[Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture].
Create sketchbook/portfolio using sheet of posterboard. Teacher will provide
pages that will be added as needed.
Set up folders:
1. as notebook for art vocabulary.
2. for information on art contest information and art historical information.
Student work will be displayed in class and in the Main hall across from the
library as well as in the library at MJHS.
Student work will be stored at school for potential submission to selected
local, regional and state-wide juried contests and exhibitions when the work
meets the required criteria. Some contests, like those for event posters,
will be done by interested students on their own outside of class. Some
exhibitions venues are the Empty Bowl Project and Meal at the Mandeville
Trailhead Complex and the Three Rivers’ Festival Children’s Art Exhibit both
in November and Mandeville City Hall exhibit in March. In April, there will
be a school-wide evening program, Patriots on Parade. All art students will
exhibit during this event.
I am hoping to schedule 2 field trips this school year. These will provide
pertinent educational value at an art museum or at galleries.
Recommendations and information for individual family field trips to
galleries/museums will be offered.

Lessons will have a two-fold objective:
1. Students will develop their skills in observational drawing.
2. Students will develop creative approaches to manipulating subject
matter, materials and techniques.
Tools for achieving these objectives:
1. Students will familiarize themselves with the Elements of Art in
order to work from observation.
2. Students will familiarize themselves with and employ the Principles
of Design in order to creatively manipulate subjects, media and techniques.
Aesthetics and Art History will be incorporated in to each lesson.
Art vocabulary will be developed through reference and usage. Lists will be
provided for the folder.
Discussions and Critiques will be done weekly in order to assist the students
in developing their work. They will need to think about what they are doing
in order to make aesthetic and creative decisions during the process of
making art.
The outline below is a proposal for lessons for this school year. It will be
developed more specifically after I receive input from the students. Any
proposal will remain subject to change due to time restraints and the
availability of special materials from the designated supplier.
