Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Students,
Teaching is one of the highlights of my school year. It is with
great enthusiasm that I will be teaching religion during this 2011-12
school year. The focus of our class will be to live our Catholic
faith daily. We will correlate our Catholic faith, our beloved
Catholic traditions and rituals with our daily living. Our textbooks
(Liturgy and Word and Morality) will be used as a resource. Students
are encouraged and will occasionally need to use other sources, such
as the internet, encyclopedias, primary sources, etc. to complete
assignments.
A variety of instructional styles will be utilized that includes
visual, linguistic, logic, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies. Our
class will use the Socratic style to encourage class participation.
Students are strongly encouraged to discuss their views that are
supported by facts. Homework will be issued daily and reviewed the
next day. Quizzes will be given almost daily. Tests will be given
approximately every five to seven days. All assignments, classwork,
tests, quizzes, etc. will be organized in a student folder. This
folder will be organized by page number and will be graded
periodically for completeness and accuracy. Each grading of the
folder will constitute one major test grade. Students will be given
two bonus points for having the folder signed by their parent every
Tuesday. Folders are to be submitted for grading on the prescribed
day. Five points will be deducted for each day the folder is
submitted late.
Generally, major tests will be a combination of multiple choice,
matching, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions. All
short answer and essay questions should be answered in complete
sentences. Points will be deducted for spelling when the noted words
are not corrected prior to submitting the folder for grading. The
same is true for correcting the responses on tests.
Several projects will be assigned during the 2011-12 School Year.
Please refer to the rubric that will be distributed when the projects
are assigned. All lessons will be aligned with the Catechism of the
Catholic Church.
Students will be given a syllabus at the beginning of each chapter.
All class assignments will be posted on the OLPS website
(www.olpsschool.org).
Nine Weeks Grading Scale:
Tests 50 Percent (Service Hours (8) will count as one test
grade)
Quizzes 10 Percent
Folders 30 Percent
Projects 10 Percent
Thank you for sharing yourselves with us. It is our pleasure to be a
part of your lives. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance or
discuss particular needs or circumstances. We want very much to help
in every way possible.
God bless,
Sharon Coll
Principal
