Please make sure that you have a large binder, There are many math papers and books that need to be kept together, This seems to be hard for many 7th graders, Organization works out much better when everything is in one place.
We will start each class with Arithmetic Developed Daily (ADD) The student should take this 10 minute activity seriously since this is a review of needed basic skills. This week homework will be at a minimum-only classwork that was not finished in class. We are preparing to start our first unit of Number Sense. Our beginning activity will be getting to know the graphing calculator----this will be done in class.
During the week of Aug 15th, the students will be required to do ADD's 4-8. They will do one each day- if they are absent the ADD's still need to be completed. We will be working on the use of the graphing calculator this week. We will change fractions to decimals and visa versa. We will do the four basic operations with fractions using the calculator. We will also cover mean, median, mode, and range.Homework will be given out of the practice workbook ( decimals and fractions)
Homework for Aug 15th was PWB pg 17 (1-12). We did not have time to check it in class today so we will check on Wed. Aug 17th
Homework for Friday August is Pwb pg 15-16. This will be checked on Tues. Aug 23rd.
Monday August 22 every 7th grade student will be taking the Checkpoints in math beginning test. This will give us an idea of topics that need to be reviewed. Then Tuesday we will start mean ,median, mode and range. We will also cover comparing fractions.
The week of Aug 31st, we will study comparing fractions and the metric system. All students should be keeping up with the ADD'S each day. Also their notebooks should have their pages in date order.I am finding that many are not using their agendas. Please stress that this is a wonderful organizational tool.
Well we ended this week with a test covering the topics we had studied since the first of school. So on Tuesday after Labor Day the first thing we will do is go over the test. I will be giving a retest one morning for students that will study to bring the grade up.Then we will concentrate on the metric and customary systems of measurment. They are covered in the textbook sections 2.6-2.7 and 5.5-5.6.. We will be finding benchmarks for each measure and the converting from one measure to another.Ther will be a test over the material on Friday.
Today is Wed Sept 7th, we do have homework tonight. Book pg 83-84 ( 16-37) This is due tomorrow. We will then convert from one measure to another.
There will be a homework assignment over the weekend. It will be assigned after the test on Friday, so some may finish it. The assignment is PWB pgs 25-28.Then on Monday Sept 12th we will discuss customary measures. By Wed we will be studying perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. Students will have to add and multiply with fractions and decimals to find the perimeter and area. Each Friday we will have either an essay question to answer or a short test over the work that have been covered for that week.
The week of Sept 19th to the 23rd will be a busy week. We will be studying perimeter and area . Students will have to know how to work with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. So at home they might review how to add and multiply, so that they can ask questions in classs. We did end last week with a test over the metric and customary systems. This test will be returned by Wed.There will be homework this week ,but I will post it each day.
This week of Sept 26th will be a short week due to Fair Day. We will go over area using fractions and decimals ( this means the students must know how to multiply with fractions and decimals) Then on Thurs we aill take the first part of our exam. The students will be allowed to use the calculator and their reference sheet on this first part. Topics covered are Mean, median, mode and range-- fract to decimal to %----comparing and ordering fractions and decimals---- add, subtract, mult of fractions and decimals---- mteric and customary benchmarks and conversions---- exponents---- and area and perimeter. Having the test in two parts will allow the students to take their time and won't interfere with any other subject.
This is exam week so there will be no homework assignments. Each student should be studying for the exams of the day. Mon. is 1st period--Tues is 2nd and 5th period----Wed. is 4th and 6th period---Thurs is 3rd and 7th period. There is no school for students on Friday of this week. All my grades should be posted by Friday so you will know this weekend the final average for the first nine week grading period.
Today begins the new nine weeks. The students will be handing in their graphs that we did in class during exam week for their first grade of the period. Today all classes are going to review the checkpoints test that the took at the beginning of the year. They will have the opportunity to ask questions about anything that they did not understand. We will finish up perimeter and area and begin order of operations this week. Our questions of the day will review division of fractions and decimals. There was no homework on Monday night but there will be on Tues. The students will be responsible for a worksheet on perimeter and area. The homework for Wed. is a worksheet on area of irregular figures.
First please read the announcements. The week of Oct. 17th will begin with order of operations. The students started a worksheet in class on Fri. and will finish it today. The Practice workbook will also be assigned for order of operations. We will also go over the 10 review problems given on Fri. These were add ,subtract, multiply and divide of fractions and decimal. The grades were not good so they will be retested on Friday of this week. Other topics that will be covered and exponents (review) and square roots. Once this is accomplished we will begin Integers.
The week of October 24th-28th will begin with the classes reviewing the test they took on Friday Oct 21st. I am encouraging the students to get their notebooks back in order. Many can not find the work they did the previous day.I ask that they date their papers and put them in date order. Our problems of the day will cover order of operations since we need improvement in that area. Our new assignments will review exponents and square roots. We will begin integers next. Update---Mon. We went over the test. students were asked to correct their papers and ask questions. They were then instructed to put the test in their notebook for future reference. Tues we did a boardwork page on squares and square roots. Wed and Thurs we spent working on negative exponents and reviewing ordaer of operations. We will end this week with a halloween graph that the students will work on in class on Friday.
The week of Oct 31-Nov4th will begin with the students finishing their graph that they started Friday of last week. Tues we will discuss integers and their use. We will order and compare them. Wed. we will begin learning the rules for adding ,subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. The students will be responsible for memorizing the rules. This will take the rest of the week. This is Chapter 6 starting on page 251 in the book.
The week of Nov 7-11th, we will start subtracting integers. We made a foldable to remember the addition rules. We will do the same for the rest of the operations. You might ask your child to see them because eventually they will have to memorize these rules. They will have worksheets to practice but there is a section in the text on integers.( Chapter 6). If your child is absent, please have them get their make up work because they will be behind if they don't complete this work in order.
The week of Nov.14-18 will be our last weeek before Thanksgiving. Monday all students will take the S. Tammany Checkpoints test for math. Hopefully the students will continue to improve with each test. Then Tuesday thru Friday we will study different types of graphs( bar and line graphs, box and whiskers, and stem and leaf plots) The assignments will come out of the textbook Chapter #3.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. When we return there will be some changes to the grading system. The problems of the day will be graded for accuracy. The students do not seen to be trying on them because we go over the problems but I have not taken grades. We will go over the checkpoints test on Mon. Then on Tues we will begin a unit of graphing and reading charts. This will take all week. They can expect ADD's for homework.
In this last week before exams (Dec 5-9) , we will continue to work on the Connected Math Algebra unit. We are analyzing line graphs and graphing from tables. We will continue to have problems of the day and ADD's for homework (31-34 will be assigned this week) Much of our work will be done in class, so students much give their total attention.Their work will be handed in as a packet so they must also keep up with their assignments.
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED ON THE NINE WEEK EXAM: Add,subt, mult, and divide of decimals, fractions and integers. Exponents, order of operations, square roots, absolute value, scientific notation, perimeter and area will also be covered. We have been reviewing through problems of the day. The students could also look up the topics in the textbook to review. Many need to start studying now and not wait until the very last minute.
I want to welcome everyone back from the Christmas Holiday. These first 4 days of the new year will be spent reviewing algebra terms and learning to write and solve equations. We will then apply this knowledge to the bike trip lesson that we started before the break. You can find this information in chapter 1 and 7 of the book. Lets get off to a good start and study a little each day.
The week of Jan 3-6 was successful. Most students learned to translate form English to mathematical symbols. They also learned to solve one step equations. This week of Jan 9-13, we will expand our solving to inequalities. These are done exactly like equations only there are less than and greater than signs instead of equal signs. The answers also must be graphed, so we will once again be looking at the number line.It is so important to get off to a good start this new semester. PLEASE monitor the grades carefully and don't let make up work mount up.
This week of Jan 17th - 20th is filled with activities. Today Jan 17th we will begin a new unit on similiarity. I will review some of the concepts missed in the algebra unit also. We will be stretching and shrinking figures, drawing similiar figures and comparing them. Most of the work will be done as classwork. They may have a few review questions to do for homework each night.
In the week of Jan 23rd-Jan 27th , we will continue the Stretching and Shrinking unit. We will begin to learn about flips, slides, and turns. We will also learn to find a missing measure on similiar figures by setting up ratios and proportions. The next grade on this unit will be the packet the students are putting together will all their daily classwork. They will get points for all lessons completed.
Once again we will continue the Stretching and Shrinking unit for the week of Jan. 30 thru Feb 3rd. We will find missing measures of similiar shapes using proportions. We will also practice essary questions using this method. Our problems of the day will feature circumference of a circle. There will be an upcoming project (it will be started in class but finished at home) of filps, slides, and turns.
We will begin the week of Feb 6-10th with a project. The students will need colored pencils or markers. We will be writing their in flips, slides, and turns. This will take both Mon. and Tues. Then the remainder of the week ,we will talk about unit pricing, scales on a map, and other proportions. Our problems of the day will cover area of a circle---by the end of the week all students should know their parts of a circle and how to find circumference and are of a circle. Also the Winter Checkpoints test must be given one day later in the week.
This week before Mardi Gras break, we will spend finishing up ratio and proportion and circles. Today I plan to go back through the Checkpoints test so that students can see how they did. We will do unit pricing on Tuesday.Setting up proportions with calories and food on Wed. Then circles on Thurs and Fri. After the break we will review integers.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Mardi Gras, When we come back we will be reviewing integers. Tues. however we must take the essay portion of the exam (hint the students should study circles) The rest of the week we will review. The homework will be to start studying. The exam covers ratio and proportions, cirfumference and area of circles, integers , and equations.
The week of March 5-9th is exam week. The math department is giving their exam on Tuesday. The students should spend the weekend studying for reading on Monday and math on Tues. We have been reviewing ratio, proportion, circles, integers, equations, and input and output charts. They have already taken the essay portion of the exam that was worth 20 points of the 100. After the exam we will spend time applying integer rules to fractions and decimals.
We ended last week discovering the difference between an integer and a rational number. The students worked for bonus points by making a number of their choice into an animal. This along with two worksheets is due Monday. These are the first grades of the fourth nine weeks. We will spend the rest of the week working on add, subtract, multiply and division of rational numbers. Please encourage your child to get off to a good start.
The week of March19-23, will bring more rational numbers. Tues. we will have a field day because the eighth graders are taking the first part of the LEAP Test. Monday we will be subtracting rationals numbers and Wed. Thurs we will multiply and divide them. Friday we will have our first major test of the nine weeks. The next topic we will cover is looking for patterns.
This week before our spring break (March 26th -30th) we will concentrate on review items. We have taken two practice I-leap tests. I have given the results of the one we did in groups back. . We went over all the problems. Then Friday we took another practice individually. They will get the papers back on Monday and we will review all questions again. We also have been working on essay questions.
This is the week of April 16th-20th. We will be testing Mon. and Tues. so there will not be any assignments those two days. On Wed. we will start a unit called What do you expect? This deals with probability. There will be class assignments that the student will be graded on participation. There will also be problems that if they do not finish will become homework.
The week of April 23rd-27th, we will continue working on probability. We will be making counting trees and analyzing number cube games.Th students should be keeping all their work in date order. I will check their work at the end of each chapter and that will be a major grade. Also since most of the work will be done in class, it is really important that the student is in class each day. They will miss the explaination if they are not there. Please keep pushing your child to finish strong and not quit early. We are preparing for 8th grade.
The week of April 30th through May 4th we will finish up Probability. We will then pick up some Geometery skills needed for 8th grade. It is so important that the students keep up in class and do not give up.We are doing most of the work during classtime and then discussing the concepts. They should be able to tell you each day what we covered and show you their notes. Please keep pushing them to do their best.
The week of May 7th-11, we will finish reviewing integer equations. We will then apply this knowledge to inequalities and graph the answers. The last skills we will review are flips, slides, and turns. One day this week the students must take their last checkpoints test. They should start studying for their exams so they do not have to cram at the last minute.
