5th Grade- General Procedures
Beginning of the Day: Students come in, check in & order lunch with clothes pin, and unpack
their backpacks. We begin in each day by saying our morning prayer, our mission statement and
the pledge. Before switching classes at 8:00, we take roll, complete the lunch count, and
collect lunch money or other notes. Lunch money should be brought in an envelope with the
student’s name, homeroom teacher, lunch number, and what account the money is to be used for
(ex. extra sales).
Recess: Both fifth grade classes go to recess at the same time. Recess is right after lunch.
Students may use the restroom during this time. If it is too hot or raining, we have indoor
recess where we allow the students to play games, read, draw, or we will watch a video. Both
teachers remain with the students during recess.
Lunch: Students do not have assigned seats at lunch. Two student
are assigned cafeteria duty. They will clean the tables after lunch. After returning to the
classroom, we take a restroom break. Both teachers have lunch duty every day.
Restroom Breaks: We allow a restroom break at switch time (about 10:15 most days). Ms. Bernard
stands in the hallway by the restrooms, and Mrs. Redmond monitors the students in the
classroom. The students have a restroom break following lunch after we return to the
classroom. We let students go to the restroom at other times during the day unless we feel they
are abusing the privilege.
Tubs: The students keep their supplies and books in tubs in the back of the room. The
students go to their tubs in the morning, at switch time, and before packing to go home.
Afternoon Dismissal: At 2:55, we allow the students to pack, go to their
tubs, and get their backpacks. We dismiss after the second bell at 3:05.
Signing Papers: At times we will send home a test/quiz/assignment that needs to be signed and
returned the next day. This keeps the parent "in the know" about what is occuring in class.
Discipline: Each student is given one warning. If the student makes the choice to break the
classroom rule again, he or she will be asked to write their name on the board. The next step is
a check mark being placed by his or her name. On the third offense, the student's name is
circled and they will have earned a detention. Any major infractions will be sent dierectly to
the office.
Class Rules:
Be Prompt
Be Positive
Be Productive
Be Polite
Follow all teacher instructions
Rewards:
In Mrs. Bernard's class the Point Reward System is used. See the following for an explanation.
Students get one reward point for bringing each required item/supply to class.
These can include:
-pencils/pens
-red pen
-binders
-workbooks
-Student Planner
-red folder
-writing journal
-homework
-class work
Each day points are recorded by a stamp mark or signature on their “credit card.” The
accumulated points can be spent in the class store for prizes.
Groups also accumulate points to spend in the store.
Class points result in a class party.
In Mrs. Redmond's class the "All Star Class Competition" is used. 5A and 5B are in competition
every nine weeks. As a class, the students have opportunities to earn stars for their class. The
class at the end of the nine week with the most stars will recieve a class party of their choice.
