FAQFrequently Asked Questions: These are some questions children or parents commonly ask. Do you have question you think I should post? Email it to me and I will add it to the webpage.
What do I need for the first day of school? You will need a healthy snack, a lunch or lunch money, and a smile! I have a red Take~Home folder ready for you at school. I also have school supplies for you, I even got a pencil box for your things too! Please don't bring 'supplies' to school, I will ask you to bring them home & keep them for homework. (1) The easiest way is to use the email link at the top of this website's homepage. I will try to read & respond to emails daily. (2) Call the school office at 508-324-3160 and leave a message. I pick up messages in the afternoon when the children go to specialists (can be as late as 2:00). I will try to call back the same day. Occassionally phone calls become a game of "phone tag". If I haven't been able to contact you via the phone by 3:30, I will try again at 8:40am the next school day. You can always email anytime. (3) Send in a note, just make sure your child knows to give it to me. I read notes every morning when the children are unpacking & signing for a lunch. Do we have snack in second grade? Yes, we have a snack & movement break every MORNING about 10:30. Please pack a nutritious snack that you would serve in the morning at home. Some healthful ideas are: apples (I will slice it into wedges for children), grapes, bananas, carrots & dressing, granola, PB & crackers, and yogurt (don't forget the spoon). You can buy a 5 day ticket for $8.75. The ticket is good for any 5 days (it could be used all one week, over a month, or even longer). Send cash or check (written out to Somerset School Lunch Program) in an envelope marked with your child's name, 5 day lunch ticket, and 2J. You can click on Somerset Public Schools link on our class homepage and find school menus and pricing on the district web site. Second grade has lunch at 12:20. It is almost an hour later than kindergarten & 1st grade. By the end of September, most children have adjusted to the different schedule. I use SeeSaw, Lucky, and Click clubs. Each has great prices on different level books. The Click has interesting titles for computer software. Second grade readers have a wide range of skill and ability levels, so I like to send everyone a book club selection that meets all those. In addition, some books offered are just fun reading! Remember every purchase you make helps build our class library ~ Thanks for ordering! How long should homework take? I plan for homework to be a review of classwork and take between 15-20 minutes to complete. You are welcome to help your child if he or she has some difficulty. If you get to 30 minutes working with your child, STOP and attach a note to the homework letting me know that your child needs more instruction in school and I will be happy to work on it with your child. I believe homework in 2nd grade is not worth struggles at home; it is a way to develop study habits & review work from school. What if my child must take another bus? It is school policy that any requests for a change in transportation be written. Please send in a note stating the date of the change, the bus your child will take, and the address your child is being dropped off at. (Please remind your child to give me the note so there are no last minute bus troubles- Thanks!) How can I help with class parties? Since I have been at Chace Street, I've learned that just about every class has so many complex food allergies and other health concerns involving food. So, I have changed what we do for holiday celebrations from the more "traditional" class party of cupcakes & punch to a more creative, interactive holiday experience. I welcome parents to join us in planning (and volunteering to run) an afternoon of fun... in the past I have planned a storyteller to tell spooky stories on Halloween, I have had parents run a holiday themed arts & craft afternoon (we don't have time for this during our regular busy days),and we have done a class gift exchange. I am open to all kinds of ideas!!! If you have an idea, let me know & we can coordinate a date, time, and other parents to help put together a memorable experience for your children. I do use the PTO list of parent volunteers when planning & requesting supplies and ideas, so if you hear from our coordinator it may be for unusual party "supplies". E-mail me anytime with your ideas or questions!!!! |
