Math Facts

Second grade standards require children to master addition and subtraction
facts with automaticity (known quickly "by heart"). We begin studying addition
math fact strategies in September and move to subtraction facts strategies
once we have strong addition facts. There is an order for learning math facts
which makes memorizing easier. We will follow this sequence in class.

Your DAILY PRACTICE of just 5 minutes makes a HUGE difference in mastering
math facts. (Rule #4 Practice it will HELP you!)

Make a set of flashcards. Index cards work great, write only on one side &
lightly mark the answer on the back side. Once each fact strategy is mastered
with automaticity (known "by heart"), add the next set of flashcards to your
practice pack. Soon, your child will be fluent in math facts.

Addition Strategies
(1) Start with adding 0's & 1's (the sum is the same, or just 1 more)
(2) Adding 10's (the number added to 10 fills the 0 space 10+7=17)
(3) Adding 9's (make a 10 and it is one less...9+4, think move 1 to make 10
and add 3 leftovers)
(4) Doubles (2+2, 5+5) Just need to know these...
(5) Doubles +1 (2+3, 5+6... think 5+5 and one more)
(6) Adding 2's (count up if needed)
(7) Ways to Make 10 (3+7, 2+8, 4+6 and the turn arounds)
(8) Trouble Makers! (4+7, 5+7, 6+8 and the turn arounds)

Subtraction Strategies
(1) If numbers are far apart, count DOWN/BACK (12-3)
(2) If numbers are close together, count UP (12-9)
(3) Use the related addition fact. ( 7-4=? Use known addition facts... think
4+? will equal 7)
