(Grade 3 – Grade 5)

 

 

Standard #1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms

 

 

Outcome: Student should be able to demonstrate refined fundamental patterns. Attainment of mature motor patterns for basic locomotor, non locomotor and selected isolated manipulative

skills (throwing, catching, striking) is an expected exit outcome

 

 

Benchmarks + Progress Indicators:

Students will…

-        throw, catch and kick using mature form

-        dribble and pass a basketball to a moving receiver

-        balance with control on a variety of objects (balance board, large apparatus, skates)

-        jump and land for height using mature form

Standard #2: Applies movement concepts and principles of learning and development of motor skills

 

 

Outcome: Students should be able to use critical elements to refine personal performance of fundamental and selected specialized motor skills, as well as to provide feedback to others.

 

 

Benchmarks + Progress Indicators:

Students will…

-        transfer weight from feet to hands at fast and slow speeds using large extensions (mule kick, handstand, cartwheel)

-        accurately recognizes the critical elements of a throw made by a fellow student and provides feedback to that student

-        consistently strikes a softly thrown ball with a bar or paddle demonstrating an appropriate grip

-        understand that appropriate practice improves performance

Standard #3: Exhibits a physically active lifestyle 

 

 

Outcome: Students will begin to develop an awareness of participation in physical activity as a conscious decision and personal choice for both enjoyment and health-related benefits.

 

 

Benchmarks + Progress Indicators:

Students will…

-        participate regularly in physical activity for the purpose of developing a healthy lifestyle

-        describe healthful benefits that result from regular and appropriate participation in physical activity

-        identify at least one activity that they participate in on a regular basis (formal or informal)

-        begin to be aware of opportunities for more formal participation in physical activities in the community

Standard #4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of fitness

 

 

Outcome: The learner will begin to match different types of physical activity with underlying physical fitness components and should participate in moderate to physical activities in a variety of settings.

Students will…

-        engage in appropriate activity that results in the development of muscular strength

-        maintain continuous aerobic activity for a specified time and/or activity

-        support, lift and control body weight in a variety of activities

-        regularly participate in physical activity for the purpose of improving physical fitness

Standard #5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings

 

 

Outcome: The student will identify the purpose for and follow, with few reminders, activity-specific safe practices, rules, procedures and etiquette.

 

 

Benchmarks + Progress Indicators:

Students will…

-        when given the opportunity, arrange the gymnastic equipment safely in a manner appropriate to the task

-        take seriously their role to teach an activity or skill to two other classmates

-        work productively with a partner to improve the overhand throw pattern for distance by using the critical elements of the process

-        accept the teacher’s decision regarding a personal rule infraction without displaying negative reactions towards others

-        assess their own performance problems without blaming others

Standard # 6: Demonstrate an understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings

 

Outcome: The student will build on the foundation laid in the early grades, students are encouraged to develop a cultural/ethnic self-

awareness. Recognizing and appreciating one’s own heritage lays

the groundwork for understanding and appreciating the differences in others.

 

Benchmarks + Progress Indicators:

Students will…

-        recognize differences and similarities in others’ physical activity

-        indicate respect for persons from different backgrounds and cultural significance they attribute to various games, dances and physical activity

-        demonstrate acceptance of the skills and abilities of others through verbal and nonverbal behavior

Standard # 7: Understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction

 

 

Outcomes: The learner will appreciate and apply rules and regulations, strategies and appropriate etiquette for movement, dance, games and sports

Students will…

-        experience enjoyment while participating in physical activity

-        enjoy practicing activities to increase skill competence

-        use physical activity as a means of self expression

-        demonstrate the ability to support classmates by offering positive suggestions to help improve or assist their performance

-        listen attentively, follow directions and rules

-        demonstrate good sportsmanship both as a participant and as a spectator

-        accept responsibility for themselves by leading and following in a positive manner

-        participate in special activities with classmates of lesser and/or greater abilities
