Classroom Update: February 2010
We have just finished discovering all 3 of Newton’s Laws through classroom discussions, demonstrations, and lab activities. To culminate the experience we will create animated flip books. Animated cartoons are an excellent resource when studying Newton’s Laws of Motion. It is possible to find evidence of the laws being obeyed as well as disobeyed. Think about how many times Wile E. Coyote fires a cannon, only to have the cannonball hang in midair while the cannon shoots backward into him – which law of physics does this defy? (Ask your 8th grader about the answer)
Students will produce their own mini-cartoons in the form of an Animated Flip Book. The actions in the flip book will illustrate at least one of Newton’s Laws of Motion, which the students will have to identify, and write a paragraph about. Students should have a package of 3x5 or 4x6 index cards for Tuesday, February 2nd. I also suggest either a Ziploc baggie or binder clip for storing and transporting the flip books back and forth to school safely. Reminders...
