What should my child bring to school on the first day?

A regular sized backpack (small ones don't have enough room), a leakproof canister/bottle of
water labeled with their name, a plastic two pocket folder, 2 snacks, a lunch/lunch ticket, clean
underwear and socks in a labeled ziploc baggie (which should stay in bag for the year), a sweater
if needed. Please refrain from sending in a lot of other things because it makes it hard for your
child to keep things organized. Some parents put one book or one stuffed animal or
small toy for the bus ride. There are no cubbies for individual items and all personal belongings
are kept in the backpack. Electronic games and trading cards are NOT allowed in the classrooms.

Does my child need help with their backpack items every day?

YES! Please go through your child's backpack EVERY DAY with them because their is always
information in their folder for you and it should stay clean and neat. The sooner you teach them by
helping with this responsibility at home, the sooner they will become more independent in caring
for their own things in the classroom. It will make them feel proud and sure of themselves.

Why do we have to send 2 HEALTHY snacks a day?

Hunger and our Health Curriculum! Your child is working hard and need to eat frequently. We
have a snack time at around 10:00 am and again in the afternoon. If your child is not finishing
their lunch because of distractions in the cafeteria (this is very common) then they will need a
second snack in the afternoon. Note:NO JUICE at snack time. We have a water fountain in the
classroom and children may bring water bottles that are labeled with their name and DO NOT
LEAK onto Library books or their work in the backpack.

My child has food allergies. What should I do?

BE CERTAIN to check in with the nurses before school begins with your concerns and to let us know
about any food allergies for our classroom. Let your teacher know specific concerns so your child
can have the best experiences in school. There are NO fur-bearing or feathered class pets in this
classroom and I am happy to make our classroom safe for your child.

How do I buy lunch tickets and where should I put them?

One ticket should be placed in a designated place that he/she knows IN THE BACKPACK. Make
sure your child's name is on the back of EVERY ticket (many children can do this themselves) and
indicate WHAT THEY ARE BUYING. Only ONE ticket at a time in the backpack please! They are
very easily lost in Kindergarten. Tickets should NOT be sent to school in a child's pocket. Please
be sure to purchase tickets on Mondays by sending a check in a MARKED ENVELOPE AS SHOWN:

How do I help my child be successful in school?

Set a consistent bedtime! Most kindergarten students go to bed at 7:30. Make sure they have two
HEALTHY snacks each day. Remove old food and clean reusable water bottles. Check your
child's backpack EVERY DAY for notes, homework or news. Stay connected to what they are doing in
class both academically and socially. Check the class web page often! Be interested and have
fun...it's a special year!

I want to help but I work or have to be home. Is there anything I can do?

Absolutely! Let me know if you can do projects at home like make games, cutting things for
projects or washing smocks. If you can come in just once in a while that would be great too. I
always ask for parent help to use a dye cut machine (it's easy!) to make pattern block shapes
and other thematic items, cleaning toys and math manipulatives as they get dirty, repairing worn
books, etc. There is plenty for you to do to help!

Can I help in the classroom? What do I have to do?

Yes! I will be asking for 2 parent volunteers each day to come help during our Literacy Center Time
at our first Open House in September. I will also need parent volunteers to help in the Library.
Every volunteer MUST fill out a CORI form before they can come in. If you know that you'd like to
volunteer, please see Mrs. Knight at the front office at your earliest convenience and have your
driver's license with you to fill out a CORI form.

How do I change my child's dismissal plans?

Each child has a dismissal plan that is kept on a master sheet in the classroom and the office. In
the event of a change, the parent/guardian must write a note to state a change in the routine and
send it THE MORNING OF THE CHANGE so that we can be sure to make the necessary changes.
Be sure this note is DATED and SIGNED and is in their folder. Long term changes can be made
by sending a note as well. In an emergency, parents can call the office to make a last
minute change as early in the day as possible.

What is the Card Behavior System that is used in the class?

This is a simple system that empowers your child to want to do well and will be demonstrated to you
at the Open House. If you have any further questions, please let me know.
