Dear Parents,
Thank you for your continued help to prepare your child for school each day. Please continue to
check your child's folder and back pack each day as well as sending 2-3 individual snacks in addition
to their lunches. We have been using many snacks from the "forgotten snack" basket lately because
it seems children are very hungry and eat 2 snacks at one snack time and then have nothing for
afternoon snack.
This month proves to be another busy and exciting month in kindergarten. Please visit our calendar
so that you will be aware of early release and no school days. I have given you some information
that you may find interesting from my plans for the month. Feel free to read and add to your
discussion at home to enrich what your child is learning here at school.
Language Arts:
We will continue our work with concepts of print and the alphabet. I will be asking questions such
as, "What do we need to know about print?" and "Where do we find print?".
We will continue our work with phonemic awareness skills through singing and reading nursery
rhymes as well as reading books that have rhyming patterns. We have also learned a lot about
segmenting and blending sounds in words. Ask your child to show you how we say compound words
in our classroom to show they are made of two words that are pushed together (words like
scarecrow, baseball, toothbrush, etc). We also are learning to segment words using initial and final
sounds (/d/ /og/) as well as segmenting and blending phonemes (/d/ /o/ /g/). These skills will
support your child's reading and writing skills as they develop.
Math:
In math this month, we are learning a lot about how your child understands basic math concepts
through fun activities and assessments that give us information about their current understanding.
Through these activities we can be sure that we are supporting each individual's needs and
differentiate the lessons for the children. We will continue our work with number sense,
measurement, geometry and patterning.
Science:
We will continue our work with living and non-living things by discussing how they are similar and
different from each other. We will also continue the discussion about harvesting which we shared
around the time of our field trip to Ingaldbsy Farm. This will tie in nicely with Thanksgiving.
Social Studies:
Children will be asked, "What is a family?" and we will share thoughts about our families and read
books about families. We will discuss Veteran's Day (No School on Wed. Nov 11) as well as
Thanksgiving.
Health:
We will continue to teach strategies for anger management, controlling impulses, increasing social
competencies, communicating feelings and reading body language through our activities that we do
each Monday and Thursday.
We will continue to share ideas of good hygiene and keeping clean at home and at school. We are
reminding children to wash their hands before eating or after they have touched their nose or mouth
to help stop the spread of germs.
We will periodically practice safety procedures (fire drill, etc). Please remember to set up a safe
meeting place outside of your home in the event of a fire and go over safe practices of "What to do" if
you are faced with an emergency. The children learned about this from our trip to the fire station.
Have a great November!!
Ms. Russell
