When can my child return to school after an illness?

Your child's temperature is normal for 24 hours & the child has not vomitted or had diarrhea for 24 
hours.

What if my child can't participate in all activities?

It is expected that children will participate in all activities, PE class and recess.  If that is not possible, a 
doctor's note is needed to make any accomadations.

What if my child gets strep throat?

A child who is awaiting laboratory results for a strep infection should not return to school until a 
negative culture is confirmed OR the following isolation period is completed: 1 week without drug 
therapy (penicillin or like) OR 24 hours of antibiotic therapy, provided the therapy is continued for 10 
days.

What if my child has chicken pox?

Please notify the nurse's office and your child should remain home for 1 week from the first appearance 
of eruptions.

What if my child has contracted head lice?

Please notify the nurse's office and before returning to the classroom, check in through the nurse's 
office.  Children should be nit free.  Parents will be notified of cases in their child's classroom.

What if my child needs to take medication at school?

A doctor shall provide written orders and a parent shall provide a written consent.  Medications must be 
brought to school by an adult in a container labeled by the pharmacist.  All medication will be stored in 
a locked cabinet in the nurse's office.

Can my child receive an over-the counter medication at school?

All medications must be brought to school by an adult, parents must provide written consent and it will 
be held and administered by the school nurse.

What if my child has a severe food allergy?

Please notify the school nurse with a detailed description of the specific foods and symptoms of a 
reaction.  Depending on the allergy, a physician's documentation, an individual health care plan may 
be developed to accomodate the child's needs throughout the school day.  In some cases of life 
threatening allergies, parents in classrooms may not be permitted to send in certain foods.  In such 
cases, classroom teachers will notify parents by memo of foods that are not permitted.  Parents of 
allergic students should provide necessary medications and doctor's orders for their administration.  
Students are not permitted to transport medications on their own.

Does the cafeteria at Cole serve peanuts?

Cole School does not serve peanuts (or peanut products) and we offer a peanut-free table during lunch.

Can parents pack peanut products in their child's lunch?

If parents choose to send peanut products in their child's lunches, their child will be asked to wash their 
hands before leaving the cafeteria.  This is to ensure the safety of allergic students regarding contact on 
the playground equipment.

What if I want to send in a special snack?

All labels with the ingredients listed need to be sent in along with the snack if the classroom is peanut/
nut free.  All attempts are made to provide a safe school setting and to minimize risks.  We cannot 
guarantee a peanut free enviroment at all times, the ultimate aim is to educate all involved and have the 
students be as self-sufficient as possible.

What is my child wants to bring in a pet/animal?

Animals may be brought into the classroom for educational purposes.  However, parents and students 
must obtain prior permission from the nurse and teacher before bringing any animal to school.  This is 
necessary to protect the health interests of all students.  Animals are not to be transported on the 
school bus.

What are the immunization requirements?

To enter kindergarten or to transfer into the school, children must be immunized; 5 DPT, 4 polios, 2 
MMR, 3 Hep B's, verification of the chicken pox disease or vaccine, a lead test on record and a copy of a 
5 year physical exam.

When is the nurse available?

The nurse's office is open and available to students, parents and staff from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Monday 
through Friday, following the school calendar.

When are the vision and hearing tests performed?

The vision and hearing screenings are done annually on all students.  Referrals in cases of deficiency 
will be sent home to parents.

If my child is ill or injured in school, how will I be notified?

The nurse will contact a parent using the emergency card information parent's provide at the beginning 
of each school year.  Please call the nurse or front office and update the information if any changes are 
made during the year.
