Monthly Newsletter

Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday
and break! As we move into the second part of the year we will be
learning about some very interesting topics!
Readers' Workshop: So far students have learned how to retell,
monitor for meaning, and make meaninful connections while reading.
They have also leared how to use these strategies while tracking
their thoughts through writing. We are moving onto our toughest
strategy yet-inferring! Inferring is when a reader uses the text
clues to make the best possible prediction. Students will learn how
to infer character traits, unknown words, theme and many other parts
of what they are reading!

Writers' Workshop: Currently students are wrapping up fiction writing
and taking some time to review some previous writing topics. As we
move into the next quarter we will begin nonfiction writing! Students
will learn nonfiction writing features. They will also write an
autobiography!

Math: Students are wrapping up additon concepts and preparing for
their quarter 2 assessment. We will soon begin to make the move to
subtraction concepts. Students will learn how to solve subtraction
word problems, make change, rename, and use subtraction to work with
elapsed time. We will also continue to work on our Geometry unit.
Students will be looking at angles, and 3D shapes this upcoming
quarter.
Social Studies:We have launched our Geography Unit. Students are
learning about the world around them. Students will learn about their
town, state, country and continent. They will learn about the other
continents around them. We will have an African continent
presentation at the end of January to learn all about the continent
of Africa.

Thank you all for the wonderful holiday wishes and gifts. It is so
nice to be thought of. We have had an excellent fist half of the year
and I am looking forward to the next!

Happy New Year,
Mrs. Grensavitch
