First Grade Homework
Homework will be assigned beginning on Monday, September 14th. Your
student will be given 10 spelling words each Monday. These words are part of
our reading program and include 6 words that follow a word family or phonics
pattern, and 4 sight words. These words should be studied each night. A
spelling test will be given every Friday.
Your student will be required to read for at least 10 minutes every
night. This is the best way to reinforce reading skills and increase
reading fluency. Please have your child read the small ‘take home’ phonics
readers. You can continue to keep them in the shoe box they made in
Kindergarten last year or make a new storage box for this year's books. If
your child is already a fluent reader, reading these small books will help
reinforce the phonics lessons. A strong phonics base will help your child
decode multi-syllable words and improve spelling skills.
Math homework will be assigned 2 nights each week. These math
assignments will reinforce skills that have been presented in class.
Please have an adult in your household become a ‘homework helper.’
Set up a time that your child can do homework with minimal distraction.
Some families like to get all the homework completed right after school.
Other families prefer to have a ‘homework time’ after dinner. Some
children do best if they complete one part of their homework, take a break,
then complete the remaining work.
If you have any problems or questions, send in a note and we’ll get
back to you as soon as our schedule allows.
