What did the journalist David Denby mean when he stated, “You’re here to build a self.  You create a self, you don’t inherit it.”

Our Essential Question - English room 212:  "Do we inherit a self or do we create a self?"

"Walking in another's shoes," a respect for language, and a willingness to work hard - a challenge from me to you :)

"Education Transforms Lives"  Freeman Hrabowski

"The following is a script of "Freeman Hrabowski" which aired on Nov. 13, 2011. Byron Pitts is correspondent, David Schneider, producer.

"We met a man with an unusual name you've probably never heard of, but his message about education and America's future is something we thought you should know.

"Freeman Hrabowski says the United States is not producing enough scientists and engineers - professions critical to creating more jobs.

"Hrabowski is president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. UMBC, as it's called, was once known primarily as a commuter school. Today, this mid-sized state university has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative schools in the country. Especially when it comes to getting students into math and science and keeping them there."    read more ...

Derek Paravicini on 60 Minutes: Musical Savant

"Born three and a half months prematurely, Derek Paravicini miraculously survived, but his twin sister did not. Technically, he died three times in the hospital and his eyesight was destroyed by an oxygen overdose. He has been left completely blind, partly autistic, can't tell left from right and cannot count to ten, but despite his disabilities he has an incredibly acute sense of hearing, and is a musical genius.

"Derek has the I.Q. of a 4 year old. His family had little hope that Derek would ever be able to communicate meaningfully, until at the age of two something extraordinary happened! At home with his mother, Mary Ann Hanbury, Derek sat at the piano playing a tune. Soon after this Derek was taken to a school for the blind.

"At the school there was a piano lesson going on, Derek broke free from his mother and ran straight towards the piano, as if he could see, and pushed the little girl, who was having the piano lesson, out of the way and started to play."   (60 Minutes Transcript)
