When we talk about just right books it may seem confusing to some parents but your children are learning what they need to look for. To choose a just right book -it needs to look interesting to them -have information or a story they want to know about -when they begin to read it they should make less than 5 mistakes on the first page -when they have read the first few pages they should be able to tell you what it is about. Then they are on their way to choosing just right books. An average second grader comes to school in Sept. reading on a level I and by the first assessment in Nov. should be on level J/K. By the end of second grade they should be a level M. On my benchmark page it gives you an example of what that text should look like. The following web pages also give you some examples and ways to find out what level a text is. I hope this helps when your child is selecting books from home, the book store, or library. A few suggestions of books at each level
