Essex PTO Update                                          February 2012

Family Science Night

Thursday March 8th, 2012, from 6-7:30pm at EES School Cafeteria.  Admission is free.

Come join us for an exciting Family Science Night filled with fun and engaging hands-on science activities for the whole family.

Come experiment Light with Rainbow Pinwheels, investigate Sound with String Telephones, control your own paper glider with cut out fins, find the connection between Electricity and Magnetism with electromagnets, build an electrical circuit to turn on a light bulb or drive a motor, see a solar energy and a plasma ball demonstration, make different types of Simple Machines and find out how they are used every day, build a strong bridge with toothpicks and mini-marshmallows, collect the fingerprints for the whole family and find out the patterns, and best of all, make your own ice cream in ziploc bags and enjoy!

This evening is designed for children and a supervising adult to explore these science activities and have fun together!

Interested in helping out?  Volunteers are still needed to make this night a big success. On Tuesday February 28th from 6-7pm there will be a “dry run” of the event to acquaint all the volunteers with the the various science stations.

If you would like to volunteer to help run a station, and/or if you have an idea for an experiment, please email Han Cristoforo at hanacris24@gmail,com  You can also sign up to volunteer at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C44ACAE2D6-family

Our Biggest Fundraiser of the Year

Auction time!  Our PTO online Auction will take place April 3 – 13.  This is the major PTO fundraiser for the year.  It helps to pay for all of the enrichment programming and field trips that our children benefit from.  This year our goal is to raise $15, 000.  We need your help to do this!  Here’s how you can help:

  • Making calls: we need people to follow up on the letters and emails being mailed out. Can you make calls during the business day?
  • Picking items up from area businesses: once we get a commitment from a business to donate, we often have to pick up items. Are you willing to pick things up?
  • Parent donations: our best donations come from parents. If you’d be willing to consider what you can donate and ask your family and friends what they can donate, that helps us put together an appealing donation list.

If you are interested in participating in the auction, please contact Annie Cameron (anniecameron@comcast.netor 978-471-9870).

Wanted:  Garden Committee Volunteers

Kim Field, a fifth grade teacher at EES, is spearheading an exciting Green Team initiative.  The emphasis is on sustainability and composting.  In particular, garden beds would be constructed and the vegetables would be harvested and used in the cafeteria’s lunches.  As this is still in its initial stage, Kim is planning a feasibility study and putting together a plan of action.  Volunteers with a strong knowledge of gardening and a enthusiasm for “greening up” EES should contact Kim as soon as possible.  You can reach her at fieldk@mersd.org

A Huge Messy Success!

Wow!  What a night!  Families from EES and the surrounding communities came out to try their hand at over 15 fun, messy and engaging art techniques!  The evening was a big success on two fronts.  Participants had the opportunity to learn about the exciting art opportunities on the North Shore and the PTO raised $1100! A special thank you goes out to The Messy Art Committee:  Winnie Rennie and Melissa Glorieux.  Fantastic job ladies!  Thank you to all the wonderful (and tireless!) volunteers who helped out that evening.  And another big thank you to the participating artists:
