Essex PTO Update        February 2010

Messy Art Night Was A Great Success!

Woo Hoo!  More than two hundred people attended Messy Art Night! Over forty people volunteered to make it all possible.  We raised $1000 at the door to support kid’s programs in Essex.  We collected another $115 for Haiti Relief at the snack table. That is better than we ever thought possible!

Thank you to all who participated and volunteered on that fun night.  And a special thank you to all the talented artists who made this night a grand success.  To continue the art exploration and to thank you for all of your help, we would like to post information about your business on our PTO website. Please send any information you would like posted to Michele Notte at thenottes@gmail.com. Also, if you took any pictures that you would like to share with the community, please send them (or a link to them) to Michele as well.

Check out the Photo Gallery (on the side bar) to see all the fun that was had that night!  You can also view Tom Underwood's photos from the night on his Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Underwood.Photography

Coming Next....Noisy Music Night!

Mark your calendars now for the next First Friday Family Fun Night!  On March 5, Jon Holland and his band of drummers will be at EES for an interactive performance.  They will bring about 20-30 authentic African drums and about 20-30 large homemade drums (parade drums) to add to that.   They have about 40 smaller percussion pieces and some fun kinds of parade flags and shakers. The kids get to play and touch all of the drums.  There will be a demonstration piece to give folks the understanding of how the drums work together in an ensemble but then people join in and play along.  Additionally, kids can make their own drums and shakers at activity tables.

How You Can Help:

Save your empty containers (with lids) for drum-making!  There is a collection box next to the PTO display case.

What’s New on the Web Site

If you haven’t poked around the web site recently, take the time to do so now!    If you’ve ever wondered what’s discussed at the PTO Meetings, check out the new Meeting Minutes page.  There you will find the minutes from all the meetings of this school year.  Maybe it will spark you to attend the next one and add your input!

The Photo Gallery is full of new shots from Messy Art Night and 3rd Grade’s Enrichment Program: Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride.

The winter blues may be upon you, but you can find some fun stuff to do in the area by clicking the Fun Stuff for Families tab.  Keep checking back at this one as it is updated every 2 weeks with more fun stuff and more cool web sites.

The Enrichment page has a list of upcoming events.  Find out what programs your kids will be participating in!

If you are wondering how you can lend a hand, Karin Carroll would be happy to hear from you.  Link to the Volunteering  page to see what you can help out with.

The Box Tops page has the recent standings for the PIZZA PARTY contest that ends at the end of the month.  It is updated weekly so you can see just who is racing to the lead!  This page also will give information about sweepstakes opportunities from Box Tops for Education.  All they take are clicks from you and EES could be a winner!

Hope you will visit us often and keep looking around for what’s new with the PTO.  We welcome your input and ideas so please contact us  (Contact the PTO sidebar).

District Budget

The School Committee and Administrative Team worked very hard to put together a responsible budget that impacted our children and their academic programming as little as possible.  At the School Committee Meeting on February 2, it was voted upon and passed with a 4% increase from last year.  The next step is to present it to both the Towns of Manchester and Essex.

You can view the Budget Workshop on the front page of the District web site:  www.mersd.org.

Your Thoughts Please
As we try new things, we need to hear your response.  If you are willing to share your thoughts, please drop us a note addressed to the PTO.  You can send it in with your child or e-mail Jess at:  jyurwitz@gmail.com.  We will definitely take your thoughts and ideas into consideration as we plan our future fundraisers.  Thanks for your help!
