General Information

·         Health classes meet once in the six day cycle.

·         Classroom instruction will be differentiated in order to meet the individual learning styles of all students.

Topics

          The following are the outlines of the Health topics we plan to cover this year in the elementary grades.  Additional topics may be added in order to coordinate with enrichment activities that occur throughout the year.

Grades K- 3

·         Social/Emotional Health–respect & responsibility, empathy, conflict resolution, communication, working cooperatively

·         Personal health–hand washing, germs, and the immune system – preventing illness

·         Tobacco–tobacco products and influences

·         The Body Systems–cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, digestive

·         Nutrition–food plate, healthy snacks, portion sizes, and fast food

·         Physical Activity–fitness, flexibility, and exercise

·         Injury Prevention–fire safety, bike safety, sun safety

          In addition to the above, 4^th & 5^th graders will be introduced to the specifics of the National Health Education Standards.  A list of the Standards is included and more information is available on Miss Richards’ web site. 

Assessment

Students in Grades 1-4 will be assessed using the following categories:

·         Beginning (1); Developing (2); Meeting expectations (3); or Exceeds expectations (4)

Assessment

Students in the 5^th grade will receive letter grades and will be assessed on:

·         Projects & Presentations

·         In-class Activities and Assignments

·         Posters & Paragraphs

·         Homework

·         Group Activity Work

Expectations

It is expected that students will come to class prepared to learn and actively participate.  The student's willingness to respect, listen, and work cooperatively with their classmates is also expected.
