Social Studies

In Social Studies 4K and 4S are focusing on:

    State Projects!

  • Each student is working on a state project. They have been researching their state and are now completing a state poster. The posters will be on display at our Fourth Grade Share on Monday, June 22 from 1:45-2:45.
  • We are also incorporating social studies work into our reading block. We are learning about immigration and Ellis Island

Vocabulary Review

Important Vocabulary from unit 4: thematic map, annual rainfall, patterns, temperature, climate, polar, tropical, seasonal changes, major land use, farming, ranching, forestry, urband areas, population density (high and low), population patterns, time zones: Eastern, Central, Pacific, Mountain, Hawaii-Aleutian, Alaska, economics, economic strength, patterns of wealth

Important Vocabulary from unit 3: sphere, hemisphere, globe, Equator, Prime Meridian, lines of latitude, lines of longitude, global address, road map, alphanumeric grid

Don't forget that we are working on the Great American Postcard Challenge! Please remind your family, friends, etc. to send in postcards from different states to help us meet this challenge! The kids and I are really enjoying this project and get so excited every time we receive a postcard. We have over 290 postcards so far including one handwritten by Sarah Palin, but don't let that stop you from sending them in! Please feel free to stop by to see how this challenge has taken over the back wall(s) of our classroom!

States we do not have a postcard from yet: WE   HAVE   ALL   50 STATES!!!

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • If you are interested in coming to help out in class please let me know. You can come see the program and help groups of students as they complete the hands-on activities. Social Studies is typically scheduled from 2:20-3:00 each afternoon, but is at 10:50 for 4S on C days.
