Test Preparation: PARENTS STILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

Many parents have requested information on how to help their children study
for tests. As much as your child may tell you that they do not need
help, all but a very few need guidance in preparing for tests in all
subjects. Below are some strategies that will assist in test preparation.

1.For every subject make vocabulary flash cards using an index card; put the
vocabulary word on one side and the meaning on the other. Quiz your child
orally with these cards.

2. Using homework sheets and questions from the text make up a practice test
that you administer either verbally or in written form.

3.Have your child create a quiz. Then later the student can take it, and
after you correct it they can find the correct answers to the errors.

4. Have your child list for you the 5 main points of the topic. Then have
them provide oral details.

5.Have your child power thinking (power outline) the material.

Telling your child to go study without guidelines is often less productive
than using the active strategies above. Many children have difficulty
beginning their review.

For the child to be successful your involvement is an asset. You may check
the agendas to see when tests are scheduled. Tests are generally scheduled a
week in advance. There are never more than two tests on any given day, but
there may be three quizzes. Quizzes may be unannounced or have only a day
or two notice.

Please check your child’s agenda for current information. The assignments
should be fully written out. The word “sheet” or “test” is not enough.
Entries should tell exactly what the assignment covers.
