Writing will be a major component of the class. We will work on developing
the following types of writing:
• Informal, in-class short response – usually one or two paragraphs
assigned at
the beginning or end of class; turned or discussed in during the period.
• Essay exam response – length will vary, written in class on a
specific question or topic.
• Journal entries – one to two pages; written in notebook in
analytical response form.
• Formal essays / papers – two to five pages, typed, graded on
school-wide rubric, based on an assigned topic.

Requirements and Expectations:
Please read the student / parent handbook closely. All policies in this
class are in accordance with school expectations. The consequences for these
infractions can be found in the handbook. The following are some ground
rules for our class.
• Attendance is essential. If you are not in class you are missing
discussion time that is essential to the learning process in accordance to
the student handbook, you are required to complete all work within one week
of the absence. .
• Tardiness will not be tolerated. If you are late three times, this
will equal one absence.
• A respectful attitude is essential. Any disrespect to your
classmates will result in you being asked to leave class. If this occurs,
this will be
counted as an absence.
• No cell phones or iPods are allowed in class. Any that are visible
in class will be taken away and turned into the office.
• Cheating is a serious offense and will be met with serious
disciplinary action. This includes quizzes, tests, and plagiarism of any
degree on essays. See the school handbook for more specifics on cheating.
• Homework will be given regularly – most every night and sometimes on
weekends. Messy or incomplete homework will not be accepted. Take pride in
your work. Long-term assignments may be given over vacations.
• Tests will be announced ahead of time. Reading quizzes may be
unannounced to make sure you are keeping up with your work.
• If you do not have your homework at class time, it will be marked as
a zero in the book. Homework is checked approximately 30 times per quarter
so each assignment is worth 5 points.
