About The Teachers

Wendy Smith earned her Masters in Reading from Bridgewater State College.  
She has been teaching at the Igo School for more than a decade.  Mrs. 
Smith's favorite children's book is Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. 

Jenn Howe earned her Masters in Reading from Lesley University.  She has 
been teaching here at the Igo for three years.  Previously, she worked as a 
first grade teacher in Medford and Everett, MA.  Mrs. Howe's favorite 
picture book is If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff.

Anne Stow earned her Masters in Reading from Lesley University in 2003.  She 
joined the Igo team in 2007.  Previously, she worked as a Reading Specialist 
in Medfield and a classroom teacher in Sudbury and Chelsea, MA.  Mrs. Stow's 
favorite read aloud is The Witches, by Roald Dahl.

Diane Noonan earned her Masters degree as a Consulting Teacher of Reading 
from Westfield State College.  She brings a wide range of teaching 
experiences from other public school systems to Foxboro.  Mrs. Noonan's 
favorite picture book is, The Little Old Man Who Could Not Read, by Irma 
Simonton Black.

Strategies Good Readers Use

1. READ!
2. Read their own books
3. Gossip about books
4. Abandon books they don't like
5. Use context clues
6. Make connections to their lives
7. Make movies in their minds
8. Bust up difficult words and ask, "Does that sound right?"
9. Ask questions
10. Read for different purposes & adjust their rate
11. "Chunk" text, rather than read every word
12. Check out illustrations
13. Know how to skim
14. Read a variety of genres
15. Predict, then confirm or deny their predictions
16. Develop a large vocabulary
17. Reread to clarify
18. Respond to meaning rather than plot
