Thoughts on Math

Oh, how I love math! I am so excited to help the children develop
their mathematical thinking skills this year. I believe that ALL children
are capable of high level thinking and deep understanding of math concepts.
I plan to challenge my students to really understand math topics and not
just memorize algorithms. As the school year progresses and concepts get
more challenging, I have found that children and parents get discouraged
when a concept is not understood immediately. Please know that many
concepts learned this year will take time and patience. Sometimes just
working through one real problem, but really understanding it, is much more
beneficial than quickly using a memorized set of steps to solve
15 “problems.”
Math is more than just solving quick “problems.” After all, it’s not
really a “problem” if it doesn’t take some thinking to figure out! We
will work all year on problem solving skills. These are skills the children
will use for the rest of their lives! What is more exciting than that!?
