I started teaching when I was about eight years old, dragging my younger neighborhood friends into
my "classroom" to teach them the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. When they weren't
available, I had a class of imaginary students (some of my best ever) that kept me busy. I also created
a lending library of about 50 books, and checked them out to those same neighborhood chums
through my bedroom window, probably one of the very first "walk-throughs"!. Therefore, it seems
hard to believe with such an early start that it has taken me almost 30 years from receiving my
teaching degree to actually having my very own classroom, and since fourth grade was my favorite
year as an elementary student it is not really a surprise that I call 4G home at the Franklin School.
What makes my classroom fun and exciting is that I love learning right along with the kids, and we
discover all kinds of new things together - I'm not afraid to say "I don't know", but I always add "Let's
find out!" With quick access to the Internet, we are immediately searching for information, which
models for the kids the researching and learning process. This, I believe, is critical for their success
not only in the classroom but for their own personal success in years to come.
I love: my family and friends, Maine, dark chocolate, writing, the outdoors, gardening, dark
chocolate, cooking, reading, tennis, sitting by a crackling campfire, the New England Patriots, a good
joke, teasing my sister, traveling...dark chocolate, (did I already say that?), and BEING A FOURTH
GRADE TEACHER!
This year, my hope for this class is that we will..
