Instrumental Music - Band Descriptions

 

 

 

Grade 8 Band Class

Meets on an A/B day schedule.

Students will discover new ways to use and write music by exploring sounds and ideas in a lab-like setting with a focus on composition, improvisation and arranging.

 

Grade 7 Band Class

Meets everyday for one period.

Students will build on their knowledge of music through theory, listening, conducting, music critiquing/assessment and more.

 

Grade 6 Intro. to Band

Meets everyday for one period.

A “guided tour” of the fundamentals that are essential to being a member of a music ensemble.

2 days a week will be spent on repertoire building of music at an easy to moderately easy level.

 

Grade 6-8 Sectional Lessons

Meets one period a week on a rotating basis.

Fine tuning of instrumental skills in a small group setting. Students will also be working on scales, solos, etudes and chamber pieces in a mini-workshop setting. Practice tools will be taught throughout. Students will be using the Essential Elements Book 2 or 3.

 

NEW! Festival Band – Tues. & Thurs. Ext HR

Meets twice a week during the extended homeroom time.

Students in this group are from grades 6-8 and must spend individual practice time outside of school to prepare the pieces for performance. There will be two performances (1/12/12 & 6/7/12). Students in this group must have grades in good standing in their other classes to participate.

The music played will be moderate to moderately difficult in level.

Students in this group will be participating at a festival in the spring of 2012. There is a fee for admission to the festival.

Attendance during rehearsals are absolutely mandatory.

The class grade is based on participation.

Jazz Band

Meets two mornings a week from 7:00am-7:40am.

Focus on repertoire building of smaller group music in all styles: swing, funk, rock, blues, etc. The group has one evening performance in February and a tour of the elementary schools in the spring. Jazz is an “auditory art” - listen to Jazz a la Mode on 106.1FM from 8-11pm every weekday.

Jazz Band will begin rehearsing about a month after school starts.

 

Private Lessons

Weekly lessons will be offered to any interested student whom wants to improve their playing skills on their instrument. Lessons will be scheduled Monday thru Thursday at 2:30 and 3:30 for a half hour session. (Some Mondays may be cancelled due to faculty meetings.) Students may have the opportunity to work with a teacher that specializes on their instrument. Sign ups will begin after the first month of school.

Mentoring

Grade 7&8 students will have the opportunity to work with younger students in a mentor-like setting. If you are interested in participating, please let me know.
