The Eagles Band was founded in 1936 and is the oldest continuing performance
ensemble in the Berkshires. The band was originally sponsored by the Fraternal
Order of Eagles Aerie #358, but traces its roots to the 390th Field Artillery
Band (1918). The 390th disbanded in the late 1920’s (there was no longer a
need for a Field Artillery in the Berkshires...)and many of its members formed
the Pittsfield American Legion Band, which begat a “renegade” group that
started rehearsing at the Eagles hall in 1936.

The Berkshire Symphony Orchestra is a 75-member symphonic orchestra
comprising, in roughly equal proportions, the most elite Williams College
music students, Williams music faculty, and musicians from regional orchestras
such as the Albany, Springfield and Hartford Symphonies. The BSO presents four
concerts each season with five rehearsals for each concert.

The Berkshire Bach Society is the only member-based musical organization in
Berkshire County. It uniquely focuses on one composer, and creates programs
with the long-range goal of exposing its membership (actual and potential) to
a broad perspective on the works of J. S. Bach.

The Empire State Youth Orchestra, Inc., (ESYO) was founded in 1979 by Barry
Richman. With colleagues Lois Lyman and Eleanor Barnes, Richman gathered a
group of parents and music educators to organize an orchestra for the region's
talented young musicians. For the first two seasons ESYO had only one ensemble
– the Youth Orchestra. Today, it’s an “umbrella” organization of nine
ensembles comprising over 300 young musicians, as well as an instrument
training program for low-income, inner-city students. Performing groups are
progressive in order to provide an opportunity for younger, less-experienced
players to start in one group and (with successful auditions) move into the
higher level groups.
