English Language Arts: I will be assigning homework Monday- Thursday each week if I have
your child for Language Arts or Math or both. Students will have a spelling list and/or some
type of writing on Monday night. They can use Spelling City found on my internet links page.
During the week, I will assign short reading passages with questions addressing a specific
comprehension concept being address during the week. You will see FACTS, SEQUENCE, MAIN
IDEA, DRAWING CONCLUSIONS, INFERENCE as well as answering questions with the 5-W's.
I usually send home leveled reading so that your child should be able to make an attempt to
do this on their own, however, sometimes reading it or SPECIFIC WORDS they are unfamiliar
with, is the better way to go. As they approach mid year, we should be working as a team to
make them as independent as they can be.
Math: Students should be practicing skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's, 10's
and /or practicing multiplication facts, addition and subtraction facts.
Homework will be given each night as a practice time on the skill being presented in class.
There will also be spiral reviews. If I give a math assessment during the day, they will most
likely not have homework in math.
Helpful Hints: set aside a time and place for HW. Encourage your child to do this
independently with you checking it after. I might also send home a math reference notebook
which would contain a visual aide, steps to solving a problem or applying to a new skill. This
should come back the next day, and students are rewarded with bonus bucks if they show
responsibility for one more item to return to school.
Math homework is to be done in pencil!
If your child has difficulty with a concept or skill for homework, please don't push too hard
but don't excuse them completely either. I would appreciate an email, note on HW or phone
call to alert me to any difficulties.
