Fact Strategies

We expect children in grade two will know their addition and subtraction facts with speed and accuracy through 18.  During conferences parents often ask how to help their child learn their facts.  The short answer is practice, practice, preactice!!  However, if your child is feeling overwhelmed by the task, break it into easily accomplished steps.  I would suggest that you practice each math strategy we have worked on in school until the child knows the facts associated with that strategy automatically before moving onto the next strategy.  Praise your child for what they know, help build their math confidence!          Always keep reviewing

I would start with the plus 1s.  It should be easy to achieve success with these.  Remember they can add numbers in any order.

1+1   2+1   3+1   1+4     1+5   etc.

After your child knows these automatically, move onto plus 2s.

2+1     3+2      2+4    2+5   etc.

From the plus 2s move to plus 3s.   Remember: the strategy they have learned is that they can count on to get to a plus 3 sum, but once they understand that we want them to internalize these sums so that they do not need to "figure out the answer", they just know it.

Next I would make sure they know their doubles facts.    1+1  2+2   3+3

Move on to doubles plus 1     If you know that 4+4=8 (a doubles fact) , then   4+5=9   (doubles plus 1)

Quite a bit harder is the strategy of doubles minus 1     4+4=8        4+3=7

If they next learn the plus 9 facts and then the plus 8 facts, there are only 12 facts left to learn (6 if the understand that they can add in any order).    The six facts are                       6+4   7+4  8+4  7+5  8+5 and 8+6
