Homework Policy/Procedures
Children will be assigned homework only on Monday nights. The entire packet
is to to be completed by Friday and will collected on that day. We have had
several discussions at school regarding time management and expectations.
Although the choice is ultimately up to your and your child, I strongly
recommend completing a small amount of homework each night rather than all of
it on Thursdays.
Each child has a Home/School Folder with sections for homework and for notes
going to or coming from you. It also contains a list of expectations and
helpful hints about doing homework and a copy of our newly written “3C Best
Work Rubric”. While it is important to support your child while they do
homework, please keep in mind that homework is for your child’s benefit! The
purpose of homework is to reinforce what they have learned and allow them to
practice new skills. Your child should be spending between 20 and 30 minutes
each night on homework and an additional 20 minutes reading (more info, about
reading below). If your child is having difficulties with a particular
question, have them make two attempts on their own and then ask them questions
about it to try to solve it, rather than you simply showing them how to do it.
The rule in 3C is that the child must write me a note if they do not
understand the homework.
* Please check your child’s Home/School Folder each day for notices regarding
upcoming field trips, special events or other information.
Reading
In addition to the 20-30 minutes of homework, your child should be
reading for at least 20 minutes each night and recording what they read in
their Reading Logs (kept in their Home/School Folder). Encourage your child to
read by reading together, showing them that you enjoy reading a variety of
materials (magazines, non-fiction/informational texts, cook books, how-to
manuals etc.,) and making regular trips to the library or bookstore.
