What time does school begin?
Our school day begins when the bell rings at 8:30. Children are welcome to
arrive on the
playground (or in the gym, in case of inclement weather) after
8:15.
--------------------------------------
What should my child bring to school?
- A backpack or sturdy bag
- A healthy snack, including a drink and necessary utensils
- Sneakers or shoes appropriate for running and climbing
- Clothing appropriate for messy projects
- A change of clothes, to be left at school. Please label with your child's
name!
- Appropriate outdoor gear for the weather (we go outside almost every day).
--------------------------------------
What shouldn't my child bring to school?
- Toys (except for sharing days)
- Weapons
- Items of great value to your child
- Soda, candy, junk food or gum.
- Shoes that don't stay on his/her feet
--------------------------------------
How can I get in touch with you?
Here is my contact information, in order of preference:
- Send me a note with your child.
- Leave a message in the office, especially for changes to dismissal plans.
(781-446-6275)
- Leave me a voice mail (781-446-6245, extension 407)
- Send me an e-mail (lkaminski@postal.wellesley.mec.edu;
lynn_kaminski@wellesley.k12.ma.us after August 27)
--------------------------------------
Are there bathrooms in the classroom?
No. The children use the restrooms that are down the hallway from our room.
They check out and back in, so I always know where they are.
--------------------------------------
How do you celebrate birthdays?
Hunnewell has a no food policy for birthdays. Thus, on a child's birthday in
K-K, we give "out loud presents" (compliments and good wishes); we
sing "Happy Birthday;" and the birthday child
receives a birthday sticker and a birthday book from the class.
--------------------------------------
How do stay days work?
For the first few weeks of school, all children are dismissed at 12:00. When
stay days begin, each child stays at school for one afternoon per week. On
the days they do not stay, they are dismissed at 12:00. When double stay
days begin (in the middle of October), the Monday and
Thursday stay day groups stay together, and the Tuesday and Friday groups
stay together. This schedule continues until the whole class stays,
beginning after April vacation. Wednesdays are
always a 12:00 dismissal day for all students.
--------------------------------------
What happens on Wednesdays?
All students are dismissed at 12:00 on Wednesdays at the elementary schools.
These afternoons are used for parent conferences, faculty meetings, staff
development work, and preparation of the materials and activities we do with
your children.
--------------------------------------
How does dismissal work?
Children are dismissed through the door with the yellow columns at the front
of the school. Please park and walk to this spot, do not drive into the
driveway. Please wait for your child in the driveway, not on the sidewalk.
Also, please be sure to make eye contact with me when your
child is dismissed. If you are not here when all other students have been
dismissed, your child will wait for you on the bench outside the office. For
students going to after school programs, they will be met by their
transportation to after-school at the office each day.
--------------------------------------
What if I need to change my child's dismissal plans?
I will collect information from your family about typical pick up plans at
the beginning of the year. If you need to change your child's dismissal
plans for a given day, I must have that information in writing in the
morning. If there is a last minute change in plans, please contact
Barbara O'Brien (781-446-6275) so that your child and I will have that
information before the end of the school day.
--------------------------------------
What should my child bring for snack?
A beverage and a small, healthy snack are best. Our snack time is short, so
crackers and cheese, fruit, or half of a sandwich are good choices. Yogurt
and pudding are also fine, but please remember to pack appropriate utensils
to go with them!
--------------------------------------
How does lunch work on stay days?
Your child has several options for lunch. S/he can bring lunch and a
beverage from home; bring a lunch and purchase milk; or purchase a hot or
cold lunch from school, which includes a beverage. A school menu comes home
each month to help your family make these decisions, and school lunches work
on a prepaid debit system. Please be sure your child knows what s/he is
doing for lunch on her/his stay day! At lunch time, the children go out for
recess. Then, they come inside and pick up their lunch boxes or their school
lunch before sitting at a table in the gym or on the grass outside to eat.
There is always adult supervision with the children, should
they need assistance with any aspect of the lunch routines.
--------------------------------------
When can I come in to the classroom?
There are some opportunities to volunteer in the classroom, such as science
support and art appreciation, which I will share at Back-to-School Night.
Other opportunities to volunteer during the year will appear in the weekly
newsletters. During the year, families are invited in to share in special
events around various curriculum units. We also have a school-wide Open
School Night in February.
--------------------------------------
How will I get information about my child's progress?
There are two parent conferences scheduled: one in October/November and
another in March/April. In addition, there are two written progress reports:
one in late January/early February and one in June. Of course, if you have
additional questions or concerns about your child's progress, you may contact
me at any time.
--------------------------------------
How will I get information about what is happening during the day?
Check this website and read the weekly newsletter for updates about our
curriculum and activities in the classroom.
--------------------------------------
What if I forget to send in snack (or sneakers for PE, or a library book)?
Please make all deliveries of forgotten items to the school office, to
minimize the disruptions to
instruction in the classroom. Thank you!
--------------------------------------
How does sharing (Show and Tell) work in KK?
On their stay days, children may bring in one small item for sharing. Please
do not send weapons or fragile items to school, and keep in mind that sharing
items should fit in your child's cubby. Sharing days are stay days. If your
child stays on Mondays at the beginning of the year, that will be his/her only
sharing day all year.
