Dear Grade Three Parents,
Monday and Tuesday of next week (May 11th and 12th) we will administer the third grade MCAS math
test to all third graders. The test is untimed and we are encouraging the children to take all the time
they need to finish. In the past, most children finished each session comfortably in less than an hour.
We will begin testing at 9:30 on Monday and 8:45 on Tuesday. Children who do not finish their tests
after an hour will proceed to a quiet classroom where they will have all the time they need to finish their
tests to their satisfaction. The remainder of the school day will proceed as usual.
We have done work during the past few weeks specifically designed to help the children understand the
test format and practice test taking strategies. Additional work at home is not necessary. The children
are well prepared for this test and should feel justifiably confident. Scores for this exam will be returned
next fall. At that time, you can decide whether or not you’d like to share the information with your
children.
During the two days of testing, the children should arrive at school well rested and having eaten a
healthy breakfast. Try to have a calm, collected start to your day. Finally, you might remind your
children to take their time, try their best, and reassure them that they will do wonderfully.
Thanks for your help,
Grade Three Teachers
