Math Tips for Success

1.   Preview the section in the textbook the night before.

·        Read through the section

·        Know the vocabulary

·        Try to do the guided examples

2.   Take notes in class.

·        Copy down all examples – even if you know how to do the work today, you may not know it next week

·        Ask questions if you don’t understand

3.   Do your homework!

·        Try all of the assignment

·        Do an odd problem first and then check your answer in the back of the book.  If you don’t understand the problem or you got it wrong, check your notes or check the book for guidance.  If you still don’t “get it”, go onto the next section of the homework.

·        Copy down the original problem and show all your work.  If you get a problem wrong, the teacher can not help you figure out where you went wrong if you don’t show your work!  You could have copied down the wrong problem, added wrong, or just misunderstood the question.

4.   Correct all homework problems.

·        Mark your answers right or wrong and fix them if they are wrong.

·        Ask questions if you don’t understand.

5.   How to study for tests or quizzes:

·        Review your notes – read through you examples and the vocabulary

·        Review your homework assignments

·        Do out some of the homework problems for practice – don’t just “look” at them.

·        Do the mid-chapter reviews and the end of the chapter tests for practice.

·        Stay after school for extra help.
