Room 19 Newsletter May 2012

Math:

Math work is practice and more practice with foundational mathematical
ideas:  Reorganizing single digit numbers into a 10 and leftovers;
subtracting from numbers up to 20; knowing 10 plus any number from 1
to 10; and describing 10 as a single entity.
We continue to use what is known about single digit numbers and about
what is known about numbers as tens and ones to add and subtract
two-digit numbers. Math problems are explained in pictures (number
lines, for example), numbers (equations) and/or words.

Reading

Students have been reading many biographies! Selections have included
titles about Abe Lincoln, Wilma Rudolph, Matthew Brady, Eleanor
Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Abigail Addams, Thomas Edison, Harriet
Tubman, Ruby Bridges, Colin Powell, Laura Bush, Helen Keller, George
Washington Carver, Ben Franklin, Rachel Carson, to name a few. To
reflect about our reading, we have looked at when they lived, how they
lived, who their acquaintances were, as well as all other ways to
better understand the life of our famous person.

Writer's Workshop

Grade 4 teacher, Ms. Selhub is publishing a Bowman Magazine! She has
asked our class for submissions! We have some wonderful poems that
Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. Moeller are typing up for publication.

Spelling/Vocabulary: Words sorts, personal words and collecting
vocabulary words continue.

Science

We have begun our composting bags with worms and looking at the
properties of humus, sand and clay. Mrs. Moeller has helped us plant
herbs! Thank you!

Social Studies

Thank you for the photo contributions of your child's life. We are
working on our timelines, a bulletin board display that represents our
countries of origin and lots of vocabulary.

Lots more learning to come!
