Homework

WEEKLY HOMEWORK:

Language Arts:

Reading Logs will also be required on a weekly basis.  The children have Reading Response folders and books that contain various information on how to keep a log of what they are reading, and the rubrics for writing a letter to me.   Please take a few minutes to go over this book with your children. Reading is FUNDAMENTAL ... let's encourage it together.

Mathematics:

Each night math homework will consist of at least one worksheet that will reinforce the concept that was reviewed or taught that day.  In addition to the worksheet, students should be studying their multiplication facts to help improve their fact recall.  Most Monday nights the students will be given a weekly challenge to work on throughout the week.  The challenge will be due on Friday.  As always if the challenges or homework are to "challenging" please send in a note and we will work on it the next math class.

Massachusetts Children's Book Awards:

Dear Parents,

Fifth graders at Fiske will be participating in the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program this year. The program is sponsored by Salem State College and is intended to encourage students to read or listen to quality literature for enjoyment. The list of books nominated for the 2010 Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program is available at the following link: http://www.salemstate.edu/ACA_sohs/2009-2010_Master_List.pdf. Students must read or listen to at least 5 books from the list between now and February 2010 in order to be eligible to vote for their favorites in a statewide poll. Students will be able keep track of the books they have read on brief response sheets.  These will be kept in the library at school. At the end of February, students who are eligible will vote, and the votes will be tallied and sent to Salem State College. A winning title will be announced in April.

Copies of the 2010 Massachusetts Children’s Book Award books will be available in the Fiske library and can also be found through the public library.  Additionally, a set of the 25 books will be in each fifth grade classroom.  All of the books are available in paperback, and many are available on Playaway, tape, CD or digital download for your listening pleasure.

I hope you will encourage your child to participate in this program.  Perhaps you can read one or more of the books together as a read-aloud, or enjoy one in audio book format!  If you have any questions regarding this program, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
