The Brain: What's Going On In There?

Spike The Happy Neuron

Use this link to view an animation of normal neurotransmission across a synapse.
Normal Neurotransmission

Use this activity to see that some neurotransmitters excite (examples are
dopamine and glutamate) and some inhibit (ex. GABA) the firing of the
post-synaptic neuron.
Neurotranmitter Actions

Test your understanding of the effects of neurotransmitters by looking at
different cases of neurons in series. Depending on the neurotransmitters
involved, the end result will either be excitement or inhibition. Can you
determine how the post-synaptic neuron will behave?
Neurons In Series

Shows how neurotransmission changes when cocaine, as an example, is used. If
time allows, go back to this site and select Pathways to the Brain at the top
to see how different drug delivery systems enter the body at different speeds.
Drugs Change the Way Neurons Communicate

Use these animations from Bill Moyer's show on Addiction from Channel 13 to
answer questions in the packet.
Animations from Moyers on Addiction

A highly-engaging interactive review of specific drug effects from a lab mouse
perspective.
