NEWS FROM ROOM 186

                              February 2012
February is here and with it comes the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day.  It is hard to believe that we will have six more weeks of winter as Punxatawney Phil predicted.  We really haven't had much of a winter this year in terms of snow and extremely cold temperatures.  I am personally a big fan of spring so it's my hope that Phil is wrong and spring will be here soon.

Reading Workshop

The students are working toward gaining a deeper understanding of Question and Answer Relationships. Throughout these two months, we will be reading passages, both fiction and nonfiction. We will be discussing the reading cycle as far as what good readers should be thinking about before, during, and after reading. The overall goal is for students to be able to read questions and respond to them efficiently and accurately.

Writing Workshop

We have finished our unit on narrative writing. The students developed very entertaining fantasy stories in which snowmen came to life and got to Fiske Elementary. They had to develop their main character and make sure that their stories had a plot.

As we all know, knowing how to write opinion essays is an essential skill that all students need to practice. This month, we are building upon our previous essay unit by writing persuasive pieces. Again, we will be taking the students through the writing process and you can look forward to seeing their work at our next conference.

However, you don't have to wait until then to see any of your student's work. Ask them to bring it home and share it with you, so long as they bring it back the next day.

Math

We have recently began Unit 3: Geometry.  For this unit we will stay in our homerooms and review several concept areas:  angle measurements, using a protractor, using a compass, types of triangles, congruency, properties and angles of polygons, tessellations and intersecting lines.

Social Studies

The students have been working cooperatively to create power point presentations on a Native American Tribe. They have been researching and creating the presentations in groups of two's or three's.  In addition to the powerpoint the groups will be creating an arts and crafts project representing their tribe.  All of the work has been done in class.
Science
The kids continue to get a "shock" out of science as they work through the Electricity unit.  They have also been participating in some MCAS review as well.
