Dear Parents,
The children have been working very hard and have recently finished a
booklet on mapping. They are like little sponges and enjoyed learning about
mapping; the world, oceans, continents, our own United States and reading
north, south, east and west on a map were just some of the information we
explored. Also, as we learned about our own country on a map we visited some
famous national monuments and natural wonders along they way.
In math we continue with addition and subtraction. The children are also
learning place value with numbers and money. We have played many money games
and they are really doing well. If possible when you are shopping, please
include your child with money transactions. Also, play lots of the games which
can be found on the math website. The next unit is on fractions, which is a
very difficult concept. It is only an introduction, so the children are not
expected to have mastered it by the end of first grade. At home when cutting a
sandwich or dividing items up encourage your child to use the words such as;
in half, in thirds or in fourths.
In writing, we will finish up our fairy tale unit with three plays, which we
hope to preform for the preschool class. The children have had a great time
putting expression into their voices when reading their parts. Next, we will
be are starting a poetry unit. This is a truly magical time for me to watch
your children find words for how they see this beautiful world around us.
Poetry gives children time to be inspired and use descriptive words and view
nature. What a gift! Finally, in writing we will finish up the school year
with "all about books" on birds.
In science, we have just started a unit on organisms. This includes growing
their own plants from seeds, raising pill bugs and guppies. It should be
really exciting, interesting and quite smelly!
Please continue to read with your children. They are really reading
beautifully and I am glad to see from the reading logs all the wonderful books
that they are reading at home.
Thank you for all your support and kind words,
Mrs. Tully
