I joined MVMS in 2007, as a special education teacher for the TIDES
program, after working as a high school and elementary school tutor in
Marblehead since 2004. Prior to joining Marblehead Public Schools, I taught at
a residential treatment center, worked as a special needs advocate, and
directed a summer curriculum enrichment program for an independent school.
I began my career as an educational researcher, developing strategies for
determining cognitive style among groups of non-traditional students in order
to develop more meaningful curriculum. After several years in corporate human
resources, I decided to return to the field of education, earning an M.Ed. in
Instructional Design, and certification in Special Needs and English Language
Arts. I am committed to differentiated instruction and flexible inclusion
strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
I have lived in the Marblehead-Swampscott community for twenty-five years.
My son, Julian, attended Marblehead Public Schools for several years, and now
attends Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. When not at school, I enjoy spending
time with family and friends. Some of my interests include reading, film,
cooking, traveling, bicycling, Nordic skiing, and everything about the ocean.
I am especially interested in getting to know my students and their
families, as well as my colleagues at MVMS to make it a great year.
The TIDES program is committed to empowering students in becoming
respectful and responsible learners by helping them to understand behavioral
and academic criteria for success; and, by learning and employing coping
strategies to effectively meet these criteria. The program operates on a
leveled incentive system designed to motivate students in meeting their goals.
Emotional support is provided by the school social worker, TIDES teachers,
tutor, and other therapeutic staff. In addition, the TIDES program benefits
from ongoing consultation with a behavioral specialist and school psychologist.
Students are assigned a balanced schedule of small, supported classes as
well as general education classes, depending upon their individual, changing
needs. Small classes in English Language Arts and math offer deliberate,
assessment-driven instruction to strengthen student's skills and prepare them
for integration to mainstream classes. TIDES students are provided with
organizational and curriculum support throughout all of their classes, as well
as through scheduled curriculum support periods and after-school homework help.
Our goal is to develop a strong partnership with parents / guardians to
ensure that students get the extra support needed at home and in school to
meet their educational goals.
