Mayan numbers

Because the base of the number
system was 20, larger numbers
were written down in powers of
20. We do that in our decimal
system too: for example 32 is
3*10+2. In the Maya system, this
would be 1*20+12, because they
used 20 as base. One of their
greatest contributions is the
discovery of the number “0”.

Mayan calendar

The Mayan solar calendar was
composed of 365 days of 19 months.
At the center, the Mayan God of
Time supporting the burden of
time on his back. The Mayans also
believed that the world would
come to an end in 2012.

Aztec Calendar

The calendar consisted of a 365
day calendar cycle and a 260 day
ritual cycle. These two cycles
together formed a 52 year, a
century, sometimes called
the Calendar Round.Every month
had its name, and the days of the
month were numbered from one to
twenty.The original Aztec
Calendar is a 12 feet massive
stone slab. On December 17th,
1790 the stone was discovered,
buried in the Zocalo Plaza
(the main square) of Mexico City.

Mayan Mythology

According to the Mayans, their
Gods created man from a corn on a
cob.Therefore, the Mayans called
themselves the people of the
corn.

El Cinco de mayo- 5th of may

Cinco de Mayo (The Fifth of May)
is a national holiday in Mexico
which is also widely celebrated
in the United States. It
commemorates the victory of
Mexican forces led by General
Ignacio Zaragoza over
the French occupational forces in
the Battle of Puebla on 05 May
1862.It is a common misconception
that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's
Independence Day, which is
celebrated on 16 September

Dia de los muertos-day of the death

November 1, All Saints Day, and
November 2, All Souls Day are
marked throughout Mexico by a
plethora of intriguing customs
that vary widely according to the
ethnic roots of each region.
Common to all, however, are
colorful adornments and lively
reunions at family burial plots,
the preparation of special foods,
offerings laid out for the
departed on commemorative altars
and religious rites that are
likely to include noisy
fireworks.

In most localities November 1 is
set aside for remembrance of
deceased infants and children,
often referred to as angelitos
(little angels). Those who have
died as adults are honored
November 2.

Tha Myth of the Fountain of Youth

The Fountain of Youth is a
legendary spring that reputedly
restores the youth of anyone who
drinks of its waters. Florida is
said to be its location.Spanish
explorer Juan Ponce de León was
searching for the Fountain of
Youth when he travelled to
present-day Florida in 1513.
The name Florida means the place
of flowers.
