What is the literacy lab?

The literacy lab is a place where students can spend time enjoying activities which help them develop 
and enrich skills related to reading, writing, and spelling. It is also a resource center for teachers and
parents who want to know more about helping students become proficient and enthusiastic readers and
writers.

Who can use the literacy lab?

Teachers and their classes can work at a variety of literacy centers.
Students can earn choice time in the lab as a behavior or homework incentive.
Teachers can find resources and ideas for teaching reading, writing, and spelling.
Parents can find ideas for helping students build literacy skills at home.

What can students and teachers do there?

Read quietly on the rug or couch
Review a book
Listen to books on CD and tape
Play literacy focused computer and board games
Browse periodicals
Read and write poetry
Make a book
Practice reading aloud
Read and perform a skit
Centers will rotate and change based on feedback from students and teachers, as well as academic
need.

Where is it?

The literacy lab is located in room 2, next to the art room.

When is it available?

The literacy lab will be open for use by students and teachers beginning the first week of October.

Teachers can reserve the lab for use by their reading classes. The lab is available for students during
4th and 5th grade morning recess on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. It is also open for individual
students from 12-1:30 every Friday.
