MEDFIELD INTEGRATED PRESCHOOL PROGRAM
INFORMATION BULLETIN
Our early childhood program emphasizes high quality,
developmentally appropriate activities addressing self-help skills, social
and language skills, fine and gross motor activities and concrete readiness
activities. Through playful interaction with objects and people, the
children learn about the physical and social world in which they live.
Music and art, dramatic play, books, science, math. cooking, creative
movement, playground, puzzles, games and neighborhood field trips are all
part of our active program.
Our language-based program includes monthly themes that address
emerging literacy skills in reading and writing, mathematical and scientific
reasoning, visual arts, oral language, social skills, movement and music.
Different levels of ability, development, and learning styles are expected
and accepted and will be used to design appropriate activities according to
each child’s individual needs.
CALENDAR
At the beginning of each new month, your child will bring home
an informative calendar telling of any special events (birthdays, dress-up
days, show and tell, field trips, special projects). Please refer to the
calendar for daily events since some of the activities will require
something brought from home.
CLASS TIMES
Our morning program’s schedule will be from 9:00-11:30 a.m.
Afternoon classes will be from 12:30-3:00 p.m. PLEASE BE PROMPT when
dropping off and picking up your child. Parents and students are asked to
meet outside at door #9 which faces the North Street parking lot promptly at
9 a.m.(for the morning program) and at 12:30 p.m.
(for the afternoon program). The teaching staff will meet you and your
child outside where you can say your good-byes. The preschool staff will
then bring the children into the building as a group where they will
facilitate your child’s self-help skills ( hanging up coat and backpack,
etc.). Dismissal will be from the preschool playground or from the hallway
outside the classroom. At dismissal time, children will be released only to
you. Please write a note to notify us if a person other than yourself will
be picking up your child.
PROGRAMS:
Room 1’s integrated program consists of three-year-olds
attending T and Th mornings or W and F mornings, and the four-year-olds
attending MTTh afternoons or W and F afternoons. Room 2’s integrated
program is a mixed-age grouping of three and four-year olds and is held four
mornings per week, TWThF from 9-11:30 a.m. Special needs students will be
assigned to class in accordance with their individual educational plan.
The Integrated Preschool Program will follow the Medfield Public School
calendar. School will be closed during all the traditional public school
holidays, including winter and spring break. In case of delayed school
opening due to a snowstorm, the morning preschool will be cancelled, and the
afternoon class will be in session. There will be no afternoon preschool on
in-service days.
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS
Parent participation throughout the school year is encouraged and parental
input is most welcome. We are always looking for new ideas for special
projects, programs, recipes, trips, classroom guests, crafts, music and
puppetry, to name a few. We encourage you to share your special talents
with us. Parents are asked to participate in our field trips and our
mystery reader program. When parents are volunteering in the preschool
classroom, we ask that babysitting arrangements be made for siblings and
confidentiality is maintained. Thank you for your cooperation.
CLOTHING
Please encourage your child to come to school in “play” clothes. The
children love to paint and paste, play in the sand and mud, and run and roll
in the playground. Comfortable clothing appropriate for active and often
messy play is recommended. Please send in an extra set of clothes in a zip-
lock bag to keep at school. Please place your child’s name on all outer
clothing, including school bags or lunch boxes. A backpack is recommended
for all preschoolers to transport snacks, important school papers and
special treasures.
ABSENCES
Please call the preschool rooms directly to report student absences. Calls
for AM session absences should be made by 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. for PM
students. The classroom phone numbers are:
Room 2 Sally DeGeorge (508) 242-8927
Room 1 Angie Typadis (508) 242-8847
Please consider the other students when your child is sick and keep him/her
at home if he/she is not feeling well.
News from the Nurse’s Office
Guidelines for when to keep a child home with illness
Please keep your child at home if he/she
1.Has a fresh cold-runny, stuffy nose, sneezing,
coughing---the greatest period of contagion of the common cold is the first
2-3 days after the onset of symptoms.
2.Elevation of temperature-100 degrees or above by
mouth, 99 degrees or above, under the arm.
3.Suspicious rash.
4.Sore/or discharge from eyes or ears.
5.Nausea and or vomiting within the past 12 hours.
6.Frequent, loose, diarrhea-like stools within the
past 12 hours.
7.If your child has been started on antibiotics
for an illness such as strep throat, ear infections, or diarrhea, the child
must be on medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
SNACKS
Parents are asked to send one daily nutritional snack and drink
from home. Due to food allergies, we ask children not to share their snacks
at school. We encourage healthy snacks such as cut up fruit, vegetables,
cheese and crackers, raisins, pudding, fruit cups, yogurt, applesauce, and
cereal bars. We discourage sweets (chocolates, candy and cookies) and
sticky snacks such as fruit roll-ups and gummy treats. Children may bring
in juice boxes, or water bottles, but no glass please.
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD HAS ANY FOOD ALLERGIES!
As part of learning self-help skills, the children will have
classroom jobs relating to this social learning experience, better known
as “snack time.” Learning independent toileting and personal hygiene
skills, such as washing and drying hands, will be encouraged. Children will
take turns each week with various helping activities. School
and home responsibilities will help build your child’s pride, sense of
accomplishment and self-confidence.
BIRTHDAYS
In lieu of sweets for birthdays, we are asking the birthday
child to bring in one plain white T shirt a few days before the big day so
that the children in the class can decorate the birthday shirt for the
special day. We encourage your child to wear his birthday T shirt on his
special day and we will celebrate with birthday songs and special crowns.
CLASSROOM PETS
Pets provide such a wonderful learning experience for children,
and the preschoolers love them so! We welcome any small, caged household
pet you may want to bring to school for a classroom visit. Some of our past
pets have been gerbils, hermit crabs, fish, hamsters, frogs, turtles, and
bunny rabbits.
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS ALLERGIC TO ANY ANIMALS!
