Fall has brought us many changes along with the leaves. The children are
maneuvering literacy and math centers. The Halloween excitement was palpable
but the day was great. I personally think Halloween should always be on a
Friday!! Our literacy focus continues to be on syllables, rhyming words and
beginning sounds. We are writing together and "sharing the pen". We are
completing an "I am __________" chart. The children begain a journal lesson
by writing about their favorite fruit. Everyday in our morning message there
are missing letters. We also note how many words in the sentences and point
out various punctuation. I continue to read big books to note the print, left
and right progression, words that match the picture, comprehension,
beginning, middle, end of stories. We listen for and predict rhyimng words
and play with words. Many children are beginning to write their names more
successfully with upper and lower case letters. We are refining correct
pencil grips. This can be a challenge for many children. You can encourage
your child by having them use their first three fingers on the pencil and
holding a cotton ball witht he last two.
Many friendships are building now. This can be fleeting and fickle from
day to day. But they are very important to your child. We continue to
reinforce that we are ALL friends in Kindergarten.
In November we will be talking a lot about Thanksgiving, Native
Americans, and how we celebrate this special holiday time. We will have a
mini feast the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The children will help prepare
the food in our class. There will be a lot of literature around this theme.
In math we will continue counting and begin measuring.
Our December themes will be Light and how it is used to celebrate
holidays throughout the world. We will be looking at light scientifically as
well as the cultural uses. Again, our emphasis is on respect of each person's
beliefs.
