When can I study a foreign language at MVMMS?
Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School offers the study of foreign
languages starting in the 6th Grade. 6th graders have the opportunity to
explore all four languages, one per quarter, during the school year! A
student has the choice of French, German, Italian and Spanish starting when
he/she enters the 7th Grade. These classes meet every other day! The student
can then continue on into the 8th Grade in the same language based upon the
teacher's recommendation.
Why should I study a foreign language?
The earlier you start the easier it will be for you. The world today
is quicker and smaller than ever before. Students at Melrose Veterans
Memorial Middle School will be working with and competing against
people from all over the world in just a few short years. Broaden
your world knowledge and make your life easier by learning a foreign
language now! By studying another language you often learn more about
your own.
Why doesn't everyone just speak English? Wouldn't it be easier?
For whom? If you took a 100 people from all over the world and placed
them in a room, only one would be an American. Should 99% of the
world change? Not likely to happen!

Why do I have to know all these places and names?
The world is a very busy place. Daily events in places you do not even know
can affect you greatly. Just look in your closet, see how many things you
own from around the world. When the news comes on do you know where those
places are? Why are they important? The more you know about your world the
better you will do in school! Keep your eyes and ears open at all times!
What is the best way to do well in Mr. Miner's class?
Do your homework! Write out all answers to any questions. Stay alert and
pay attention to everything that is said in class! We are in school to learn
everyday. Reading, handouts, videos, and guests are all very important
learning tools. Study and read everything you are given in class. Ask
questions when you need help! Do not be afraid to ask for help! That is why
I
am here!
What if I am sick or miss class?
You are responsible for making up all work that is done each quarter.
Yes, students do become ill or miss school sometimes, teachers too!
That does not mean everything stops! If you are out for any reason be
sure to ask for missed work, assignments, or handouts that you may
have missed. This site is one way to keep informed! Look here for
homework daily! It is not always easy but much better than missing all
your work and losing a grade! A click of the mouse is all you need to
keep informed.
Why does learning new sounds and words seem hard at times?
Most of you have been listening to English sounds for most of your life.
Your brain has placed the sounds you are most used to in first place.
The newer sounds will take practice and memory until your brain recognizes
those sounds as quickly as the English ones!
What kind of homework is there?
Homework can range from workbooks and worksheets to written assignments and
readings. Homework is an extension and part of daily classroom
instruction. Doing your homework is the quickest way to earn a good grade!
Why doesn't Mr. Miner correct my test right away?
Being quick is not always the best way! Rushing things always leads to
mistakes and I want to give you my best on every test I correct. If you take
your time and I take mine, then the chance of your test score being the
correct one is guaranteed!
Why do we see and do a lot of things in class that are German?
Mr. Miner is the German teacher. His material and subject matter deals with
Germany, Austria, and Switzerland daily. If you are interested, feel free
to ask or write any questions you may have.
Are some languages easier than others?
No! All the languages taught in Melrose are equal in difficulty and require
only the desire and effort to learn them. Like anything else in life, it
takes hard work and practice to do well!
