American Freedom Essay Contest

Who:       open to elementary, middle school and high school students (each category judged separately)

What:      100-300 word essay on the importance of freedom in your life.

When:      essay must be submitted no later than October 14.

Prizes:      a free field trip of Philadelphia with the Constitutional Walking Tour

Voice of Democracy Essay Contest

Who:       open to middle and high school students who are US residents

What:      written and recorded (audio) essay on this year's topic - Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?  Recorded essay should be 3-5 minutes long, recorded on a standard cassette tape or audio CD in the author's own voice.  Each entry must include a completed entry form.  (These are available from me in my classroom.)

When:      essay must be submitted no later than midnight on Nov. 1, 2011

Prizes:      A total of $2.3 million in  prizes will be awarded at the local, district, state, and national levels.  State winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, March 3-7, 2012.  Top prize is a $30,000 scholarship.

Massachusetts Society - Sons of the American Revolution - Essay Contest

Who:   7th to 12th grade students

What:   students write essays with original research about an event, person, philosophy, or idea associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence or United States Constitution.

When:   December 15, 2011

Prizes:   certificates/medals, $250 for state winner, $500-$2,000 for national winners.

Massachusetts Society - Sons of the American Revolution - Oration (Speech) Contest

Who:     high school students

What:    oration (speech) contest; students must cast the events of today in a way that draws an intelligent relationship between past and present, and demonstrates the freedom of opportunity that is a basic right of our national heritage.

When:   December 15, 2011

Prizes:   certificates/medals, $250 for state winner, $1,000-$3,000 for national winners.

American Academy of Neurology Foundation - Neuro Film Festival

Who:   open to all interested parties

What:   Create a short video telling your story about why more research is needed into finding cures for brain disorder such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, autism, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.

When:  January 31, 2012

Prizes:  winners could receive up to $1,000 and a trip to New Orleans to see their film shown at the Neuro Film Festival

Stossel in the Classroom - Essay Contest

Who:   13-18 year old students

What:   students write a 500-1000 word essay addressing the following topic:

Why do you think politicians make promises?  When they try to keep them, why are there often unintended consequences?  Describe a promise made by a current politician or political candidate from any party, and discuss whether or not they will be able to keep that promise and what, if any, are some potential unintended consequences from that promise.  Please use at least one example from the Stossel special "Politicians' Promises Gone Wrong" or other Stossel report to support your responses.

When:   February 6, 2012

Prizes:   225 students will receive cash prizes totaling $23,000; 1st and 2nd place winners will win an all-expense-paid trip to New York City for themselves, a chaperone, and the teacher who submitted their essays to see a live taping of "Stossel".

The Courageous Persuaders Commercial Competition

Who:       open to all high school students

What:      original TV commercial targeted at middle school students to warn them about the dangers of underage drinking.  Entry must be submitted online or postmarked by Feb. 9, 2012.

When:      entries must be received online or postmarked by February 9, 2012.

Prizes:      Scholarships and trophies for top commercials.  Grand-prize winning commercial will be broadcast on TV; the team that created it will work with Pluto Post and the Detroit Auto Dealers Education Foundation to upgrade their spot for air.

America the Beautiful Essay Competition

Who:       open to students in grades 7-12

What:      Write about a place in the U.S. that inspires you - whether it's the place you live, somewhere you have visited, or a landmark that is meaningful to you.

When:      entries must be submitted online at bestoftheroad.com/education by May 14, 2012.

Prizes:      Participating students have the opportunity to win a NOOK tablet, a trip to Washington, DC, a $10,000 scholarship, and have their essay published in an eBook available on NOOK.com.
